One of the artifacts you can find in the Returnal is called the Crimson Key. In this guide, let’s talk about everything you need to know on how and where to find the Crimson Key.
Not too far into the game, you will come across a gate that can only be opened with the Crimson Key. It is possible to not even realize that the door you found is the Crimson door.
Crimson Key Location
The Crimson Key can be found in the Overgrown Ruins which is the first biome in the game. To be more specific, the key is inside the room where you fight the first boss, Phrike. You can read our detailed guide on how to beat Phrike.
Once you are done with Phrike and let me clear, you need to beat Phrike first, you can then grab the Crimson Key from his room. The key only spawns after you beat the boss, it is a drop from Phrike himself.
A xeno-tech artifact with (Missing Data) encoded data similar to an access code. The energy signature of this key matches that of the Crimson Gateway.
Pick up the key from Phrike’s room and take it back to the room where you found the locked gate that is opened with the Crimson Key. The gate is actually an inactive portal. As you get closer to the portal with the Crimson Key it will take you to the next area of the game.
The Crimson Key is a one-time use item in Returnal which means you can’t find it in your inventory anymore. However, the portal you opened will remain unlocked for the rest of the game.
