The Last Case Of Benedict Fox is releasing next month and will also be available via Xbox Game Pass. Interestingly, the game was not intended to be a Metroidvania but became one by accident, according to creative director Bartek Lesiakowski.

Lesiakowski talked about the development of the game and that as they made the game, the environments they built became likes mazes so they mooted the idea of exploring the human psyche, and slowly the game took a new shape.

“After a few months, we were like, ‘Oh, we have a Metroidvania on our hands’, So let’s go all-in on that.

This pivot took place organically, which does make sense since Metroid and detective games do have a lot In common. Lesiakowski also talked about rewards and the currency in the game and mentioned that it is going to be tied into the storytelling.

Sometimes in games, you explore a path, and you only get a type of currency. We wanted our currency to always have some element of storytelling attached.

One of the resources that you get in the game is ink. You can get it from the demons that you defeat in limbo. It can be used to upgrade your powers. The upgrade process can be powerful for the protagonist since this ink needs to be tattooed on him in the form of patterns.

While the game does have exploration in a sense, the main focus is on platforming and combat. Players will need to find evidence in the mansion and fight demons in limbo. This makes The Last Case Of Benedict Fox feel like two games in one. You could even say that it has the ambiance of the Luigi’s Mansion series.
