How To Fix The Finals Out of Video Memory Error On PC

Share

The Finals is a free-to-play multiplayer FPS with incredible destruction physics. Being a multiplayer title, it’s important the game runs smoothly across multiple PC configurations and the developers have done a good job optimizing it. Despite that, PC users are experiencing the Out Of Video Memory error, crashes, LowLevelFatalError crash, or Low FPS and GPU usage issues. The Finals is running on Unreal Engine 5 and almost every game using this engine experiences the Out Of Video Memory error. In this The Finals guide, I will list fixes for the Out Of Video Memory error.

The Finals Out of Video Memory Error Fixes That’ll Help

The Finals surprised releases following the Game Awards 2023. The game features incredible destruction physics and great FPS mechanics. However, PC video games often face errors and issues due to multiple reasons and The Finals is no exception as PC users are experiencing the Out Of Video Memory error.

As I mentioned, the game runs on the Unreal Engine 5. Since UE5 is still in its infancy, most games using this engine are experiencing the Out Of Video Memory error. There are multiple reasons why you are experiencing the error like not enough Virtual Memory, overclocked GPU, or more. The following are the fixes that will help PC users fix The FInal’s out of video memory error.

Enable Sysmem Fallback Policy

Nvidia has included an option for “Sysmem Fallback Policy” in the Nvidia Control Panel in recent driver updates which helps PC users to fix the Out of Video Memory error. Enable the Sysmem Fallback Policy and The Finals won’t experience this error again.

  • Open The Nvidia Control Panel
  • Go to manage 3D Settings > Program Settings
  • Select “The Finals” from the list
  • Scroll down to “CUDA – Sysmem Fallback Policy”
  • Select “Prefer Sysmem Fallback” and apply
  • Play The Finals and you won’t see the “Out Of Video Memory” error again

Tweak Config File

You can fix the Out Of Video Memory error by tweaking The Final’s config file. Since the game runs on the Unreal Engine 5, there are certain liberties that PC users can take with the game. Go to “%LOCALAPPDATA%/Discovery/Saved/Config/WindowsClient” and open GameUserSettings.ini in Notepad. Make the following changes and save them. Play The Finals and you won’t experience the Out Of Video Memory error again.

Increase Virtual Memory

Virtual Memory or Paging File helps in scenarios where the system doesn’t have enough VRAM or RAM. Windows handles the virtual memory by default but, it often doesn’t reserve enough of it. This results in games like The Finals crashing with the “Out Of Video Memory” error as UE5 demands a lot of VRAM and Virtual Memory is unable to cope with it. Increase the Virtual Memory for your Windows PC and The Finals will stop crashing with the Out Of Video Memory error.

  • Open Windows Settings go to About > Advanced system settings
  • Click “Settings” under the Advanced tab
  • Click “Change” under Virtual Memory
  • Uncheck “Automatically manage paging file size for all drives”
  • Select a drive that has available space
  • Check “Custom Size”, and input the Initial size and Maximum size in MBs
  • Press OK and restart your PC

Note: You have to set the Initial size and Maximum size values yourself depending on your RAM size. Virtual memory values have to be between 1.5x or 3x of your installed RAM size. If you have 2GB of RAM, you can set a maximum of 6,144 MB. Calculate your value in MB and input it in both Initial size and Maximum size.

Open Windows Settings and click the highlighted option.
Click on Advanced System settings,
Click the highlighted option.
Click the highlighted option.
Make the changes and press OK.

Switch DirectX

The Finals runs on the DirectX 12 API and PC users report that this API is the reason why the game is crashing with the Out Of Video Memory error. The error can be fixed by forcing the game to use the DirectX 11 API. However, I am not entirely sure if The Finals supports DX11 but, some PC users have reported that switching to DirectX 11 fixed the Out Of Video Memory error.

  • Right-click The Finals in your Steam library
  • Select Properties
  • type -d3d11 under Launch Options
  • Play The Finals and the Out Of Video Memory error is fixed
Right-click the game in your Steam library and select properties.
type -d3d11 under Launch Options.

Increase Shader Cache Size

Unreal Engine relies heavily on shaders to improve its performance while keeping the visual fidelity high. If you are experiencing the Out Of Video Memory error while playing The Finals, it’s because the default shader cache size set by the GPU driver isn’t enough. Increase the Shader Cache size and the error will be fixed.

  • Open the Nvidia Control Panel
  • Go to Manage 3D Settings > Global Settings
  • Scroll down to Shader Cache
  • Select 10 GB and apply the changes.

Enable Debug Mode

Most GPUs from third-party AIB partners feature higher GPU and Memory clocks compared to Nvidia’s reference models or are factory overclocked. Both of these are reasons for the Out Of Video Memory error in The Finals. To fix the error, enable the Debug mode through the Nvidia Control Panel to force the GPU to use Nvidia’s recommended GPU and Memory clocks. Open The Nvidia Control Panel > Help > Debug Mode. Play The Finals and you won’t experience the Out Of Video Memory error.

Delete DirectX Shader Cache

Sometimes the Out Of Video Memory error is due to issues with the DirectX shader cache, instead of video memory itself. You can fix the error by deleting the DirectX shader cache. When you launch The Finals after deleting it, the game will create a new cache and the error will be fixed.

  • Open Windows Settings
  • Go to System > Storage > Temporary Files
  • Select DirectX Shader Cache and click “Remove Files”

That is all for our The Finals fixes for the Out Of Video Memory error. If you are facing errors and issues with other PC games or your PC then also see our hub for commonly occurring PC errors and their fixes.
