Steamworld Build Is Full Of References To Previous Games And Movies

The demo for Steamworld Build is available right now on Steam, and the game will release “soon”. The art director of the game, Sofie Wikström, provided some cool insights regarding the game and how it has references to previous games and popular old movies.

Wikström talked about the references in the game and mentioned that references to games and movies that we liked when we were young are in Steamworld Build. She went on to say:

I was like, ‘Oh, I love the movie Tremors and the snake that pops up and eats people – can we do that? ….. At one point of time, we all thought it looked like a dick.

She also talked about the biggest challenges while developing the game and the main stars:

One of our biggest challenges was the buildings themselves. Our robots are kind of small on screen, while our buildings are pretty large, and we knew that those are going to be our heroes, rather than the actual characters.

She went on to talk about how challenging it was to make each building unique and the unusual criterion she developed for finalizing the designs:

It should feel like each building could be edible. And I know that sounds weird. We went through a lot of art passes trying to find that tangibility and that desire to eat the art, especially for the blocks in the mine. We had so many meetings where I was like, ‘I don’t want to eat it yet. We have to push it further’.

Let us know what you think about Steamworld Build. Have you tried the demo? And are you interested in playing the game once it is out?
