Bethesda RPGs are known for a lot of in-game mechanics like having the ability to romance companions and NPCs, choices that alter quest lines, taking companions with you on your quest, and more. Starfield is set in space but it’s no different from other Bethesda titles. Of course, players can take companions with them on their space journey and Bethesda has made no secret of it. In this Starfield guide, we will help players with their companions in the game, their backgrounds, skills, where to find them, and more.

Starfield Companions

Companions play an important role in Bethesda RPGs and Starfield has a lot of them. Each companion has its unique background and backstories, skills, and quests. The following are the companions that players can find in Startfield and accompany them on their intergalactic quests or take them to explore the universe.

Note: There is a difference between Crewmakes and Companions in Startifield. Companions can act as Crewmakes but Crewmates can’t be companions.

There are a total of 20 companions that players can recruit in Starfield. Bethesda has revealed just a few of them, we’ll update as the game launches. The following is the list of companions that players will be able to recruit in the game.

  • Barrett
  • Sam Coe
  • Sarah Morgan
  • Adoring Fan
  • Heller
  • Marika Boros

Barrett is an experienced Constellation member with expertise in Starship Engineering and Particle Beam Weapon Systems, which will be very useful during space exploration in Starfield. He is a New Atlantis resident and the one who discovered the Artifact in the Constellation’s archives.

Barret has 4 skills with specialization in two of them, Starship Engineering and Particle Beam Weapon Systems. He has a passable skill in Robotics and knows just enough about Gastronomy.

Sam Coe

It can’t be a Bethesda RPG without a Cowboy in it and Starfield has its very own space cowboy in the form of Sam Coe. He is a descendant of the Freestar family who owns the Coe Plaza in Akila City. Sam is an exceptional pilot, which can be useful in space combat. He is also very skillful with rifles and can be helpful in dangerous shootouts with bandits. He is also a member of the Constellation.

Sam Coe has 4 skills but specializes in two of them. He is very good at piloting ships and using rifles. Has a passable skill for Payloads and knows just enough about Geology.

Sarah Morgan

Sarah Morgan is a former soldier and adventurer and currently the leader of the Constellation. She can be very useful during exploration with her background as a soldier and an adventurer. Not only that, Sarah Morgan is one of the companions that players can take a romantic interest in Starfield.

Sarah Morgan specializes in Astrodynamics and lasers the latter can be very useful to mine resources. Leadership is another one of her skills which isn’t surprising considering she is the acting chair of Constellation. She has a passable skill in Botany too.

Adoring Fan

Those of you who played the Elder Scrolls Oblivion must remember the annoying Adoring Fan and he has made a return in Starfield as a companion. Those of you who like to hear content praises can take the Adoring Fan with you to explore the universe. However, he isn’t completely useless as he has skills for Scavenging and carrying heavy weight, the latter is useful for storing resources if you don’t have inventory space.

Fortunately, unlike Oblivion the Adoring Fan will only become available as a companion if you choose a specific trait while creating your character in Starfield. This means the Adoring Fan will only follow you if you want it to, which begs the question, what is wrong with you?

The Adoring Fan companion in Starfield has three skills and he isn’t very skillful in any of them. He is good at weightlifting, which means if you don’t have inventory space, he’ll carry your extra weight.

  • Scavenging
  • Weight Lifting
  • Concealment

Starfield players can enlist Heller as their companion while exploring the space. Heller is an Argos Extractors employee and specializes in Outpost Engineering, which makes him very useful when creating new outposts on desolate planets.

As I mentioned above, Heller is very good at Outpost Engineering, however, he also has a passable knowledge or expertise in Geology.

  • Geology

Marika Boros

Marika Boros is a gun specialist which makes her a very useful companion in Starfield in dangerous situations, especially, if you like to make enemies in RPGs.

Marika Boros specializes in Ballistics and has a good know-how of Particle Beam Weapon Systems and has a Shotgun Certification skill.

VASCO is a robotic companion in Starfield, an expeditionary robot that is capable of traversing rough terrain and carrying heavy equipment. He can prove useful on mineral and resource-rich planets, to carry some of the weight if players don’t have the carrying capacity.

We don’t know yet what skills VASCO has, we’ll update the guide once the game releases.
