One of the very first things you will need to manage in Sons of the Forest is thirst alongside hunger and a shelter to rest. Since you cannot drink seawater, finding a source of fresh water is very important, especially in the start. Drinking Water in Sons of the Forest

During the start, you will not have access to Waterskins and must drink from the source. To find one, you will need to use your GPS to search for a nearby river, stream, etc. As mentioned earlier, seawater is a no-go. Your GPS point to a few nearby resources which you will be able to use.

After finding a river, walk to it, unequip any weapons, items, etc. that you have and press the on-screen prompt to drink water. I would also recommend setting up your tent that is closer to a river. It is as simple as that!

As you are exploring the island, try to keep an eye out on white flowers, Yarrow. These flowers can be consumed to instantly refill your thirst meter which is a lifesaver if you are unable to find any water sources nearby. As you progress further into the game, you will be able to craft Waterskins and even build a Water Collector.
