Skate Story is the next game from Sam Eng, planned to release later this year. Eng talked about the game in a recent interview and mentioned what he wanted it to be like. Here is what you need to know.
Skate Story creator Sam Eng talked about the lines in the trailer, ‘You are a demon made of glass and pain, And yet you must skate’ and mentioned that it was not part of the initial pitch for the game “but it’s based on a true story”. The fragility is supposed to make you anxious, just like an inexperienced boarder starting off for the first time. He goes on to mention:
Stepping on this thing makes me feel so vulnerable – like I’m about to shatter into a million pieces.
Eng talked about the style of the game and how it’s different from other staking games:
I wanted to have it be very retro-futurist, gritty… like something that almost looks like it could have come from a VHS skate tape from the future, but at the same time from the past.
Eng really did take inspiration from old skating VHS tapes and vintage videos. He went on to say:
skateboarding is a really visual medium. I can’t skate that well myself, so my medium of making cool clips is videogames
Eng also talked about how Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater introduced home to skateboarding:
It was my favourite game on the PlayStation, but I do remember picking up a board and then [realising], anything that’s fun in Tony Hawk wasn’t possible in real life. I wanted to make something that has a basis in the beauty I see in the simple things in skateboarding that I grew to appreciate through the real thing
Eng also described the world in which players will be skating. He mentioned that “It’s more like a weird cosmopolitan hell, where the buildings and such will warp over time”. The further you go, the more abstract the world becomes.
Let us know what you think about Skate Story and whether or not you are interested in playing the game when it comes out later this year.
