Pokemon Sword and Shield are out now and the basic aim of the game is to get strong enough to beat all the gym leaders and win the final championship. In this guide, we are going to go over how you can do that.

We are going to cover all the gym leaders in Pokemon Sword And Shield, their Pokemon and tactics. We are also going to recommend the Pokemon that you should use against each gym leader.

How To Beat All Gym Leaders In Pokemon Sword and Shield

The following are all the gym leaders in Pokemon Sword and Shield and how you can beat them:

Turffield Gym Leader Milo

Turffield Gym Leader Milo

Milo will have you wrangle some Wooloo into pens. This is pretty easy and all you have to do is heard them in the right direction. Beware of the blocking obstacle as it will scatter the Wooloo in different directions.

Milo’s Pokemon

The following are the Pokemon that Milo uses:

  • Level 19 Gossifleur (Grass Type)
  • Level 20 Eldegoss (Grass Type)

Eldegoss will Gigantamax so save your Dynamax for it.

Recommended Pokemon To Counter Milo

The following are the Pokemon that you can use to counter Milo:

  • Woobat
  • Vulpix
  • Rookidee
  • Caterpie

These are some examples. Any fire, flying or grass type will do just fine.

Rewards

Once you defeat Milo, you will get TM10 which is Magical Leaf. You also get a grass-type uniform to wear.

Hulbury Gym Leader Nessa

Hulbury Gym Leader Nessa

Nessa will have you press switched to turn off water pipes. The switches are colored Red, Yellow and Blue. Each switch turns off the same colored pipe. You will need to defeat a couple of trainers as well.

Nessa’s Pokemon

Nessa uses the following Pokemon:

  • Level 22 Goldeen (Water Type)
  • Level 23 Arrokuda (Water Type)
  • Level 24 Drednaw (Water Type)

Drednaw will Gigantamax so save Dynamax for that encounter.

Recommended Pokemon To Counter Nessa

Some of the Pokemon that are great to counter Nessa are as follows:

  • Wooper
  • Bounsweet
  • Lotad
  • Seedot

If Wooper has water-absorb then most of Nessa’s moves will heal Wooper. Other than that, any grass type Pokemon is going to be great against Nessa.

Rewards

After you defeat Nessa, you will get TM36, which is Whirlpool. You will also get a water-type gym uniform. You will be able to catch level 30 Pokemon.

Motostoke Gym Leader Kabu

Motostoke Gym Leader Kabu

Taking on Kabu is going to be a bit tricky. You need to go up against Pokemon and other trainers will damage your Pokemon while you do so. Catching a Pokemon will get you 2 points and knocking one out will get you a single point.

You should focus on knocking out the other trainers first as the wild Pokemon is pretty weak. You need to get 5 points in order to take on Kabu.

Kabu’s Pokemon

The following are all the Pokemon that Kabu uses:

  • Level 25 Ninetails (Fire Type)
  • Level 25 Arcanine (Fire Type)
  • Level 27 Centiskroch (Fire, Bug Type)

Recommended Pokemon To Counter Kabu

The following are the Pokemon we recommend you use to beat Kabu:

  • Wooper
  • Diglett
  • Tympole
  • Magikarp

These are some examples. Water-type Pokemon are going to be the most effective and ground type do well too.

Rewards

For defeating Kabu you get TM38 which is Will-O-Wisp. You also get a fire-type uniform and you will be able to catch Pokemon up to level 35.

Stow-On-Side Gym Leaders Bea And Allister

Stow-On-Side gym leaders are different for Sword and Shield. If you have Pokemon Sword then you will be able to take on Bea. If you have Pokemon Shield then you will take on Allister instead. We are going to cover both here.

Stow-On-Side Gym Leader Bea

In Pokemon Sword, Bia will have you spin around in a teacup ride vehicle. You can twist the analog stick in the direction you want to move in. Use the boxing gloves to punch you in the right direction.

Each time you clear a section of the challenge you will need to face off against a Pokemon trainer. After you have completed all the sections you will take on Bea.

Bea’s Pokemon

The following are all the Pokemon that Bea has:

  • Level 34 Hitmontop (Fighting Type)
  • Level 34 Pangoro (Fighting, Dark Type)
  • Level 35 Sirfetch’d (Fighting Type)
  • Level 36 Machamp (Fighting Type)

Bea will Gigantamax her Machamp so keep your Dynamax saved till the end.

Recommended Counters For Bea

The following are the Pokemon that you can use against Bea:

  • Woobat
  • Espurr
  • Swirlix (Pokemon Sword Exclusive)

These are some examples. You will do fine with Psychic and Fairy-type Pokemon against Bea.

Rewards

Once you have defeated Bea, you will get TM42 which is Revenge. You also get a fighting type uniform and will be able to catch Pokemon up to level 40.

Stow-On-Side Gym Leader Allister

In Pokemon Shield, Allister will have you spin around in a teacup ride vehicle. You can twist the analog stick in the direction you want to move in. Use the spooky hands to punch you in the right direction.

Each time you clear a section of the challenge you will need to face off against a Pokemon trainer. After you have completed all the sections you will take on Allister.

Allister’s Pokemon

The following are all the Pokemon that Allister uses:

  • Level 34 Yamask (Ground, Ghost Type)
  • Level 34 Mimikyu (Ghost, Fairy Type)
  • Level 35 Cursola (Ghost Type)
  • Level 35 Gengar (Ghost, Poison Type)

Allister will Gigantamax Gengar, so keep that in mind and plan accordingly.

Recommended Pokemon To Counter Allister

The following are some of the Pokemon which will great against Allister:

  • Drifloon
  • Duskull
  • Impidimp
  • Sneasel

In general, Ghost, Dark and Fairy Pokemon are going to do well here.

Rewards

Once you defeat Allister you will get TM77 which is Hex. You will also get the ghost uniform and you will be able to catch Pokemon up to level 40.

Ballonlea Gym Leader Opal

Opal is one of the best characters in the game and taking her on is going to be a bit different than your regular gym leaders. Her Pokemon are Fairy type so you are going to need Psychic or Poison Pokemon in order to beat her.

In order to be able to challenge Opal you will need to answer a couple of questions as you are also auditioning to be the next Fairy gym leader. The following are all the questions that you will be asked and their answers:

You will be able to take on Opal after you have answered the first 3 questions correctly.

Opal’s Pokemon

The following are the Pokemon that Opal uses:

  • Level 36 Galarian Weezing (Poison, Fairy Type)
  • Level 36 Mawile (Fairy, Steel Type)
  • Level 37 Togekiss (Fairy, Flying Type)
  • Level 38 Alcremie (Fairy)

Opal will Gigantamax the last Pokemon so be sure to plan accordingly.

Recommended Pokemon To Counter Opal

The following are the Pokemon which are great against Opal:

  • Koffing
  • Skurupi
  • Meowth
  • Klink

In general Poison-type Pokemon are going to do well in this encounter.

Rewards

After you beat Opal, you will get TM87 which is Draining Kiss. You will also get a fairy uniform. Getting the gym badge will allow you to catch Pokemon up to level 45 and train Pokemon to level 50.

Circhester Gym Leaders Gordie And Melony

The Circhester gym leader is different for Pokemon Sword and Shield. If you have Pokemon Sword then you will be able to take on Gordie. If you have Pokemon Shield then you will be taking on melony. Whichever the case is, we are going to cover both.

How To Beat Gordie In Pokemon Sword

In order to challenge Gordie you will need to traverse a rocky ground area and try not to fall into the hole. You will be given an item to help you do that. You will have to battle different trainers while you make your way through the maze and at the end, you can take on Gordie.

Gordie’s Pokemon

The following are the Pokemon that Gordie uses:

  • Level 40 Barbaracle (Water, Rock Type)
  • Level 40 Shuckle (Rock, Bug Type)
  • Level 41 Stonjourner (Rock Type)
  • Level 42 Coalossal (Rock, Fire Type)

Gordie will Gigantamax the last Pokemon just like the other gym leaders, so keep that in mind and plan accordingly.

Recommended pokemon To Counter Gordie

The following are some of the Pokemon that we recommend you use to counter Gordie:

  • Wooper
  • Lotad
  • Seedot
  • Diglett

Reward

For beating this gym leader, you will be rewarded with TM48 which is Rock Tomb and a new rock uniform. You will also be able to catch Pokemon up to level 50.

How To Beat Melony In Pokemon Shield

If you have Pokemon Shield, then you will take on Melony who has Ice Pokemon. The challenge will have you traverse the ice ground without falling in. You will encounter some trainers along your way. Once you are through the maze you can take on Melony.

Melony’s Pokemon

The following are the Pokemon that Melony uses in battle:

  • Level 40 Frostmoth (Bug, Ice Type)
  • Level 40 Darmanitan (Ice Type)
  • Level 41 Eiscue (Ice Type)
  • Level 42 Lapras (Water, Ice Type)

Melony will Gigantamax her Lapras so plan accordingly.

Recommended Pokemon To Counter Melony

The following are the Pokemon that we recommend you use against Melony:

  • Stufful
  • Tyrogue
  • Vulpix
  • Meowth

Reward

Once you have beaten Melony you will get TM27 which is Icy Wind. You will get the ice uniform and will be able to catch Pokemon up to level 50.

Spikemuth Gym Leader Piers

In order to start the gym challenge you need to run to the right side of the Pokemon Center and a random character will ask you if you want to start the challenge. The challenge will have you run through the streets of Spikemuth and defeating Team Yell members that you encounter on your way. After you have beaten everyone you can take on Piers.

Piers’ Pokemon

The following are all the Pokemon that Piers uses in battle:

  • Level 44 Scrafty (Dark, Fighting Type)
  • Level 45 Malamar (Dark Psychic Type)
  • Level 45 Skuntank (Dark, Poison Type)
  • Level 46 Obstagoon (Dark, Normal Type)

Piers cannot Gigantamax and you cannot Dynamax in the gym either. So keep that in mind when taking him on.

Recommended Pokemon To Counter Piers

The following are examples of Pokemon that are great against Piers:

  • Caterpie
  • Stufful
  • Tyrogue
  • Milcrey

Rewards

Once you have defeated Piers, you will get TM85 which is Snarl. You will get the dark type uniform. You will also be able to catch Pokemon up to level 55.

Hammerlocke Gym Leader Raihan

Hammerlocke gym challenge has you up against three trainers that use different types of weather in a double team. Once you beat them you can take on Raihan.

Raihan has two dragon type Pokemon and the battle is a double battle. Raihan utilizes sandstorm which you can use to your advantage when you are not using Ground, Rock or Steel Pokemon. His Gigalith Stealth Rock damages your Pokemon when they get sent out.

Raihan’s Pokemon

The following are the Pokemon that Raihan uses in battle:

  • Level 47 Flygon (Ground, Dragon Type)
  • Level 46 Gigalith (Rock Type)
  • Level 46 Sandaconda (Ground Type)
  • Level 48 Duraludon (Dragon, Ground Type)

He will Gigantamax his last Pokemon so plan accordingly.

Recommended Pokemon To Counter Raihan

The following are the Pokemon that we recommend you use against Raihan:

  • Milcrey
  • Axew
  • Darumaka
  • Magikarp

Dragon Type Pokemon are weak against Dragon, Fairy and Ice Type Pokemon. Use Water and Grass Type to take out Gigalith and Sandaconda.

Rewards

Once you have beaten Raihan you will be rewarded with TM99 which is Breaking Swipe and a Dragon-Type uniform. You will also be able to catch Pokemon up to level 60.

How To Beat The Pokemon League

Pokemon Sword And Shield Gym Leaders Pokemon League

In previous Pokemon games, you had to take on the Elite Four after beating all the gym leaders but that is not the case in Pokemon Sword and Shield. instead, you will have to take part in the Pokemon league. First, you will take on your rivals to qualify for the competition. After beating them you will go against the champion.

Qualifier Battles

The following are all the Pokemon Trainers that you are going to take on in the qualifier battles of the Pokemon League and the Pokemon that you will fight.

Marnie

Marnie uses the following Pokemon:

  • Level 47 Liepard (Dark Type)
  • Level 47 Scrafty (Dark, Fighting Type)
  • Level 47 Toxicroak (Poison, Fighting Type)
  • Level 48 Morpeko (Electric, Dark Type)
  • Level 49 Grimmsnarl (Fairy, Dark Type)

Marnie will Gigantamax Grimmsnarl so prepare accordingly.

Hop

Hop will have a different final Pokemon depending on the starter Pokemon that you picked chose. He uses the following Pokemon:

  • Level 48 Dubwool (Normal Type)
  • Level 48 Snorlax (Normal Type)
  • Level 48 Corviknight (Flying, Dark Type)
  • Level 47 Pincurchin (Electric Type)
  • Level 49 Rillaboom/Inteleon/Cinderance (Grass/Water/Fire Type)

He will Dynamax the fully evolved version of the Pokemon that he picked so prepare accordingly.

Be advised Goodra will use Rain Dance to get 100% accuracy for Thunder. Be prepared to one-hit knock out Goodra or use a Pokemon that is resistant to electric attacks.

Champion Battle

Now that you have beaten all these trainers you can take on the Champion, Leon. He can be a bit tricky to deal with and his final Pokemon is a Gigantamax Charizard. You cannot counter it with water attacks as he used the grass type Dynamax. If you are interested in countering with a water Pokemon then you should do that once the Gigantamax wears off.

His Pokemon depends on your starter Pokemon.
