Before the player can set foot in Sinnoh, he/she is asked to choose a Starter. With three options to choose from, it can get slightly overwhelming. In this Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl guide, we have detailed all there is to know about which Starter Pokemon to choose in the game.

Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl Starter Pokemon

At the beginning of the game, the player will be asked to choose a Starter Pokemon. Each one of these Starter Pokemon has its advantages and disadvantages. But which Starter Pokemon should one pick in Pokemon BDSP?! This guide has all the answers.

Piplup in the game has to be one of the best Starter Pokemon that the player can take all the way to the end. It not only boasts decent base stats across the board but can also evolve into Water-Steel named Empoleon that boosts its defense stats through the roof. However, do note that it is weak to Electric, Grass, etc. Below is the evolution that Piplup goes through:

Water-type Piplup at Lv. 14 Water-type Prinplup at Lv. 36 Water-Steel-type Empoleon

For the player who prefers offense over defense cannot go wrong with Chimchar. It is weak to Water, Ground, Rock. What sets him above Piplup is its impressive mobility and some insane single-target damage potential. Below is the evolution path of Chimchar:

Fire-type Chimchar at Lv. 14 Fire-Fighting-type Monferno at Lv. 36 Fire-Fighting-type Infernape

While it is a personal preference, we do not recommend going with Turtwig. The reason for this is because it has the most weaknesses out of three i.e., Fire, Ice, Poison, Bug, and Flying. Even when selected, it can get decently powerful once evolved. Below is an evolution pathway for Turtwig:

Grass-type Turtwig at Lv. 18 Grass-type Grotle at Lv. 32 Grass-Ground-type Torterra
