PSP2 is an upcoming handheld gaming device that is expected to be released in the coming years. New reports claim that the PlayStation Portable 2 is in active development with help from AMD.
PlayStation Portable 2 To Feature AMD APU, Runs PS4 And PS5 Games
TCMFGames reports that the PlayStation Portable 2 (PSP2) is in active development and it is going to be similar to the Steam Deck. Fans have been asking for a new handheld from Sony for a while now and the company did release the PS Portal Remote Play device which allows players to remotely play their PS5 games, but that did not get the adoption that Sony was hoping for.
The PSP2 is reported being developed with the help of AMD, so it will be powered by an AMD APU. This is not surprising, seeing how many other handheld gaming devices are powered by AMD APUs as well. The Steam Deck uses an AMD Zen 2 and RDNA 2 APU, while the Asus ROG Ally uses an AMD Ryzen APU with RDNA 3 graphics.
PSP2 Will Run PS4 And Select PS5 Games
According to Moore’s Law is Dead, the PlayStation Portable 2 will be able to run PS4 games and some PS5 games as well. We have seen that the iPhone 15 Pro is able to handle PS4 games at 720p, so similar performance on the PSP would not be surprising. The game will have to be optimized for the hardware and some corners will be cut but having the ability to play PS4 games and select PS5 games on the go would be very impressive indeed.
Since the handheld is going to run PS4 and PS5 games, it is possible that it will not support physical games. It will be interesting to see whether or not Sony allows physical copies bought on the PS4 or PS5 to run the on PlayStation Portable 2.
PlayStation Portable 2 To Release Alongside PS6
Since the device is in active development things can change and we do not know what the final product is going to offer. TCMFGames did mention that the PSP2 is supposed to be released alongside the PS6. So it will take a couple of years for it to be released. I expect it to launch in 2026 at the soonest if not later on.
