Overwatch 2 is a fun overhaul of the Overwatch game we’ve come to love. It runs on an upgraded version of the old game’s proprietary engine, which introduces a few problems. For one, players report that they seem to see an unreasonable amount of freezing in their game. This may be caused due to the following reasons:

  • Your graphics driver might be outdated.
  • Your game files might be corrupted.
  • Your GPU can cause problems if it has been overclocked.
  • The in-game settings might be cranked up to an unreasonable level.
  • Your system files might be corrupted.

Now that we know the root of this issue, we can look to possible solutions to fix the Overwatch 2 freezing issue.

Fix# 1 – Verify Game Files
The best and easiest way to mitigate the Overwatch 2 freezing issue is to check the integrity of the game files using the battle.net client. To do this, you will have to follow these steps.

  • Launch the battle.net client and navigate to the games section.
  • Select Overwatch 2.
  • Select the gear to the left of the game icon.
  • Now select Scan and repair.
  • Now, wait until the game is scanned. If there are any issues with the game files, they should be solved automatically.

Fix#2 – Reinstall Graphics Drivers
It is quite possible that your drivers have not been updated in a long
time, causing Overwatch 2 to freeze. To fix this, it is recommended that you update/reinstall your game drivers. The Display Driver Uninstaller can aid with this issue.

  • To uninstall the drivers, first go to the Display Driver Uninstaller.
  • After the drivers are installed, you need to boot into safe mode.
  • After that, you can go to your Downloads folder, right-click the DDU extraction
    folder, and extract it.
  • Now go to the DDU app, the Device Type, and then select the vendor.
  • After that, click clean and restart.
  • Now go to the website of your GPU manufacturer.
  • Enter your graphics card model and download and install the drivers.
  • Restart and see if the issue is fixed.

Fix# 3 – Change your Render Resolution And actual Resolution
If your game’s resolution or rendering method is set to a setting that is unjustifiably high, that might explain why Overwatch 2 is freezing. This can be easily done by changing the in-game settings to a lower and less graphically intense setting. It will also help if you lower the settings such as shadow quality and antialiasing to a level with which your computer is comfortable.

Everything else
Because the issue at hand can be a software issue as well as a performance issue, there are a good amount of solutions to this problem that include:

  • Closing background tasks.
  • Setting the priority of the game to high in the task manager.
  • Running system file checker.
