An ideal perimeter in Valheim consists of Sharp Stakes and Stakewall. While the Stakewalls are available from the beginning of the game, Sharp Stakes are a tad harder to get since they must be unlocked first. In this guide, we’ve detailed everything there’s to know about how to unlock Sharp Stakes in Valheim.
Valheim Sharp Stakes
When it comes to defensive tools in Valheim, Sharp Stakes or Wooden Spikes know no parallel. These things, when combined with Skatewall, can be used as a perimeter to protect the base from all kinds of dangers. However, these items aren’t available from the beginning of the game and must be unlocked first.
In order to unlock Sharp Stakes in Valheim, the first thing that needs to be done is to gather some Core Wood from the Black Forest. To do so, players need to use a Stone Axe and cut down Pine Trees in the area. These can be found rather easily while roaming around the Black Forest. For players who don’t wish to explore the Black Forest, there’s an alternative. Those players can simply use Pinecones in order to grow Pine using a Cultivator in the game.
Once enough Core Wood has been gathered, players need to head over to their Workbench and craft the Sharp Stakes using this crafting recipe:
4x Core Wood + 6x Wood
Now that we know how to unlock the Sharp Stakes, let’s talk about some other factors. Sharp Stakes have a durability of 200, requires 2 x 2 tile, and deal +20 damage to smaller creatures and even the character. Once destroyed, they don’t return any crafting materials at all.
Stakewall, on the other hand, have a total of 1,000 durability and only cost 4x Wood to build. The best practice is to use a combination of both Stakewall and Sharp Stakes to cover everything. Remember that larger creatures are able to avoid the Sharp Stakes which is where Stakewalls come into play.
