Red Dead Online: Naturalist is all about examining different types of wildlife. Doing so, however, isn’t as simple as it sounds. You’ll need access to specialized tools to sedate different animals before studying them. In this guide, we’ve detailed everything you need to know about how to sedate animals in Red Dead Online: Naturalist.
Red Dead Online: Naturalist Sedate
To unlock the Naturalist role, you’ll need to buy it for 25 Gold Bars. Once done, head over to Strawberry and head inside the hotel right next to the sheriff’s office. You’ll find two key NPCs inside – Harriet Daveport and Gus MacMillan. Both of these NPCs are interested in wildlife but for different reasons. While Harriet is leaned toward gathering animal samples to study them, Gus is more interested in spilling their blood to craft clothing items.
What you decide to do is ultimately your choice but increasing your Naturalist Rank and earning money requires you to stick to Harriet Daveport. Speak to Harriet to receive the Animal Field Guide compendium which will help you keep track of all the animals. You can also buy a map showing the locations of all Legendary Animals from her. Once you’ve found an animal, you’ll need to sedate it. Here’s how you can do it:
How to Sedate Animals?
There are a couple of ways of studying an animal. You can either sedate an animal to collect a sample or simply take a photograph – you don’t necessarily need to do both. Sedating an animal is as simple as it can get.
The first thing you’ll need is to buy is a Varmint Rifle and some Sedative ammo. Depending on the size of the animal, it can faint in a couple of shots or a dozen.
For instance, a rabbit can go down in 1-2 shots but a Legendary Boar can take around 20-25.
Once you’ve shot an animal multiple times, you’ll need to follow it and wait for it to faint. Once done, simply approach the animal and press the on-screen button to collect a sample. With a sample in hand, you can return to Harriet to sell it.
Lastly, do note that smaller animals like birds can instantly die when shot so keep that in mind. Larger animals, on the other hand, will try to put up a fight and several species of boar can insta-kill you.
That’s how you can sedate different animals in Red Dead Online: Naturalist. For more help on the game, you can check out our detailed Red Dead Redemption 2 wiki guides.
