How to Fix RTX HDR There Was a Problem Applying the Setting Error [Solved]

RTX HDR is a feature introduced by Nvidia in the new Nvidia APP that runs games in HDR that don’t have support for it.

It is a useful feature for PC users who have HDR-capable displays. However, some PC users are unable to make RTX HDR work as they are experiencing the “There Was a Problem Applying the Setting” error when they turn on the settings. In this guide, I have listed fixes that resolve the RTX HDR not working issue.

Try These RTX HDR Not Working Fixes

RTX HDR is a useful feature in the Nvidia APP as it allows PC users to enable HDR in games that don’t support it, provided they have an RTX GPU. However, some PC users are unable to use this feature. There are multiple reasons the RTX HDR isn’t working for you. The following are the fixes that will resolve the “There Was a Problem Applying the Setting” error when enabling RTX HDR.

Disable DSR and Image Scaling

RTX HDR won’t turn on if you have enabled DSR or Nvidia’s Image Scaling settings. Nvidia APP will show the “There Was a Problem Applying the Setting” error when you enable RTX HDR if DSR, Image Scaling, or both are enabled. Disable DSR or Image Scaling, whichever you use, and RTX HDR will work.

  • Open the Nvidia APP > Graphics tab > Global Settings.
  • Turn off DSR and Image Scaling.
  • Apply the changes.
  • Turn on RTX HDR and the “There Was a Problem Applying the Setting” is fixed.

DSR (Dynamic Super Resolution) allows Nvidia GPU users to render a game at a higher resolution and downsample it to their display’s native resolution, improving image quality.

Nvidia’s Image Scaling is a driver-level GPU scaler and sharpening filter that boosts frame rates by rendering the game at a lower resolution and upscaling it to your monitor’s native resolution like DLSS or FSR. However, it isn’t as effective as DLSS or FSR. Its main use is in games that don’t have FSR or DLSS support.

Disable Auto HDR

Auto HDR is Microsoft’s solution to enable HDR in games that don’t support it. However, RTX HDR is a better solution as its hardware is accelerated while Auto HDR is a software-based solution. If Auto HDR is enabled, it’s the reason RTX HDR isn’t working. I fixed the “There Was a Problem Applying the Setting” error by disabling the Auto HDR in Windows settings. Disable Auto HDR to make RTX HDR work.

  • Open Windows Settings > System > Display.
  • Click on “Use HDR”.
  • Turn Off “Auto HDR”.
  • Open the Nvidia APP, enable RTX HDR, and it’ll work in your games.

Don’t Use Multiple Monitors

PC allows its users to use multiple displays for their convenience. However, if you are using multiple displays with your PC, it’s the reason RTX HDR isn’t working. Use a single display to use RTX HDR in games. Nvidia might fix it in Nvdia APP’s final release but until then, you have to use a single monitor capable of HDR to use RTX HDR in games.

Check Peak Brightness

To make RTX HDR work with your HDR-capable display, the display must have at least 400 Nits of Peak brightness. Check your monitor’s Peak brightness and if it’s less than 400 Nits, it’s the reason the RTX HDR displays the “There Was a Problem Applying the Setting” error when you enable it. Open Windows Settings > System > Display > Advanced Display > check Peak Brightness.

That is all for our RTX HDR fixes for the “There Was a Problem Applying the Setting” error.
