How To Fix Palworld Crash On PC – Crash At Startup Fix

Share

Palworld is a PC and Xbox-exclusive game from developer Pocket Pair. The game saw an incredible launch with over 2 million sales within 24 hours of release. This is huge considering that Palworld is a Steam Early Access title, at the time of writing. Considering the game is still in development, there are bound to be errors and issues like LowLevelFatalError or Unhandled Exception error, and PC users report that Palworld is also crashing for them. In this Palworld guide, I have listed fixes to help you fix the crashes.

Palworld Crash Fixes You Can Try

There are multiplayer reasons why Plwoird is crashing like in-game overlays, outdated GPU driver, VRAM issues, and more. The following are the fixes for Palworld in-game crashes.

Enable Sysmem Fallback Policy

Palworld runs on the Unreal Engine 5 and this game engine often has issues with VRAM usage. No matter how much VRAM you have, it’s often not enough for UE5 which causes Palworld to crash while playing. To counter this, Nvidia has introduced the Sysmem Fallback Policy in the Nvidia Control Panel. Enable the Sysmem Fallback Policy and Palworld will stop crashing. First, ensure you have installed the latest GPU driver.

  • Open The Nvidia Control Panel
  • Go to manage 3D Settings > Program Settings
  • Select “The Finals” from the list
  • Scroll down to “CUDA – Sysmem Fallback Policy”
  • Select “Prefer Sysmem Fallback” and apply

Disable In-game Overlays

In-game overlays are useful as they allow PC users to access features without quitting or minimizing the game. However, in-game overlays can interfere with the game and cause crashes. If you have enabled or using in-game overlays while playing Palworld, it’s the reason why the game is crashing to the desktop. Disable in-game overlays like Steam in-game overlay, Discord overlay, or GeForce Experience overlay, and Palworld in-game crashes will be fixed.

Discord:

  • Open User settings
  • Go to Game Overlay tab
  • Turn off the “Enable In-game overlay” options.

Steam:

  • Open Setting settings
  • Go to the In-Game tab
  • Uncheck “Enable the Steam overlay while in-game” and press OK.
Open settings
uncheck “Enable Steam overlay while in-game”

GeForce Experience:

  • Open GeForce Experience
  • Click on the Gear icon next to your username
  • Go to the General tab
  • Turn off the “IN-GAME Overlay” option
Click on the Gear icon next to your username
disable in-game overlay

Increase Shader Cache

Unreal Engine games rely heavily on Shaders for their performance and visual fidelity. The reason why Palworld is crashing to the desktop is the default Shader Cache size is not enough for it. Increase the Shader cache size and Palworld won’t crash again.

  • Open the Nvidia Control Panel
  • Go to Manage 3D Settings > Global Settings
  • Scroll down to Shader Cache
  • Select 10 GB and apply the changes

Disable GPU overclock

Having the ability to overclock your PC hardware to squeeze more performance out of it, is one of the advantages of PC gaming. However, overclocking makes gaming an unstable experience. If you have overclocked your GPU or CPU, it’s the reason for Palworld’s in-game crashes. Revert the GPU or CPU to its default clocks and the game won’t crash.

Enable Debug Mode

Most graphics cards from third-party AIB partners like Zoatac have higher GPU and Memory clocks compared to Nvidia’s reference models, which is causing Palworld to crash. Enable the Debug Mode to force the GPU to use Nvidia’s recommended GPU and Memory clocks to fix Palworld’s in-game crashes.

  • Open the Nvidia Control Panel
  • Go to Help
  • Click on Debug Mode

Limit Max FPS

A lot of PC users play video games at an unlocked or high FPS. This reduces the input latency and makes gameplay smooth, however, it also puts a lot of load on the GPU and CPU, which results in Palworld crashing. Limit Palworld’s maximum frame rate and it’ll stop crashing.

  • Open the Nvidia Control Panel
  • Go to Manage 3D Settings > Program Settings
  • Select Palworld from the drop-down menu
  • Scroll down and enable “Max Frame Rate” and set a value for it

Note: Unless you use a Freesync or G.sync display, your Max Frame Limit should be 1/2, 1/3rd, or 1/4th of your monitor’s refresh rate. Otherwise, the game will feel jittery.

Open the Nvidia Control Panel
Go to program settings
Select the game from the list
Enable Max Frame Rate
Hit apply after making changes

Palworld Crash At Startup Fixes That’ll Help

PC users report that Palworld is crashing at startup and there are multiple reasons why it’s happening like missing or corrupt Visual C++ files, outdated Windows, Fullscreen optimizations, and more. The following are the Palworld’s crash at startup fixes.

Install or Repiar Visual C++ Redistributables

Visual C++ Redistributables are required to run any Application or video games installed on a Windows PC. The reason why Palworld is crashing at startup is due to missing or corrupt Visual C++ files. Install or repair the Visual C++ Redistributable files and Palworld will launch without crashing.

  • Open the Steam library and type ‘Steamworks’ in the search bar
  • Right-click “Steamworks Common Redistributables” > Manage > Browse local files
  • A new Explorer window will open
  • Go to _CommonRedist\vcredist
  • There are folders with names in years starting from 2010
  • Open each folder and run the VC_redis, both x64 and x86 versions
  • Install or repair Visual C++ Redistributables and restart your PC
Right-click Steamworks Common Redistributables > Manage > Browse Local Files.

Disable Fullscreen Optimizations

Windows enables Fullscreen Optimizations by default for every installed application and video game. This can cause games to crash at startup and is the reason why Palworld is crashing at launch. Disable Fullscreen optimizations for Palworld and it’ll stop crashing at startup.

  • Right-click Palworld in Steam library > Manage > Browse local files
  • A new window will open containing game files
  • Right-click the game executable and select Properties
  • Go to the Compatibility tab, check “Disable Fullscreen optimizations” and apply the changes
  • Play Palworld and it won’t crash at startup
Select “Browse Local Files”
Right-click the executable and select properties.
check ‘Disable Fullscreen optimizations’

Update Windows

A lot of Windows users don’t like Microsoft rolling out frequent updates and often don’t update their OS. If you haven’t updated your Windows operating system, it’s the reason why Palworld is crashing at startup. Update your Windows and the issue will be fixed.

  • Open Windows Settings
  • Go to Windows Update
  • Click “Check for Updates”

Increase Virtual Memory

Virtual Memory or Paging File helps in a lot of Windows operations and also helps in case the game requires more Memory. Palworld is crashing at startup because the default Virtual memory isn’t enough for the game. Increase the Virtual Memory and Poalworld will launch without crashing.

  • Open Windows Settings go to About > Advanced system settings
  • Click “Settings” under the Advanced tab
  • Click “Change” under Virtual Memory
  • Uncheck “Automatically manage paging file size for all drives”
  • Select a drive that has available space
  • Check “Custom Size”, and input the Initial size and Maximum size in MBs
  • Press OK and restart your PC
  • Play Palworld and it won’t crash again at launch

Note: You have to set the Initial size and Maximum size values yourself depending on your RAM size. Virtual memory values have to be between 1.5x and 3x of your installed RAM size. If you have 2GB of RAM, you can set a maximum of 6,144 MB. Calculate your value in MB and input it in both Initial size and Maximum size.

Open Windows Settings and click the highlighted option.
Click on Advanced System settings,
Click the highlighted option.
Click the highlighted option.
Make the changes and press OK.

Delete DirectX Shader Cache

Palwols is either having compatibility issues with the DirectX shader cache stores on your Windows PC or it’s been corrupted. Delete the DirectX shader cache and a new one will be created the next time you launch Palworld. This will fix the Palword’s crash at startup issue.

  • Open Windows Settings
  • Go to System > Storage > Temporary files
  • Check “DirectX Shader Cache” and click “Remove Files”
  • Launch Palwold and it won’t crash
Open Windows Settings and go to System > Storage > Temporary files.
Check “DirectX Shader Cache” and click “Remove Files”

Run The Game In Compatibility Mode

Given that Palworld is in Early Access, at the time of writing, the game is having compatibility issues with Windows 10 or 11 operating systems. Run it in compatibility mode for older Windows OS like Windows 7 and it won’t crash at launch.

  • Right-click Palworld in Steam library > Manage > Browse local files
  • A new window will open containing game files
  • Right-click the executable and select Properties
  • Go to the Compatibility tab
  • Check “Run this program in compatibility mode for” and select Windows 7 from the drop-down menu
  • Launch Palworld and it won’t crash
Browse local files.

Disable Anti-Virus

If you are using third-party anti-virus software, it’s probably blocking the game’s executable by falsely detecting it as malware which is the cause for Palworld’s crash at startup issue. Either disable the real-time protection or exclude the game folder from the anti-virus, I recommend the latter. After that, verify game files and Palworld won’t crash at startup.
