The game has cross-play so you can play with friends on Xbox Live and Steam. The first step to adding friends is to go to the menu and click on your profile level to access the My Group tab.
When you click on the empty slot you will be able to see your friends list. In this list, you can see all of your friends that are currently online. At the top you should see the Add button that allows you to add friends in Age of Empires 4.
Click add and write down the Age of Empires 4 profile name of your friend. Hit search to find your friend and send them a friend request.
When the other player accepts it, they will show up on your friends list. Add your friends to a group to start an online match in the game against AI or other players.
