Honkai: Star Rail is a game where team building is crucial to succeed. Simply relying on high-rated characters won’t guarantee victory. A team’s synergy is just as important as their individual strengths. Additionally, the game’s elemental system must also be taken into consideration when building a team.
There are four important factors to keep in mind when building the best team comp. The first is sustain. Due to the game’s turn-based combat system, monsters will eventually get their turn to attack. Having a Healer or Shielder on your team is essential to recover or prevent damage.
The second factor is synergy. Some characters work better with certain team members due to their skills and abilities. For example, Clara’s damage is heavily reliant on Counters, which means she needs to get hit. When paired with a character like March 7th who can provide a shield, Clara will be more likely to be attacked.
The third factor is Skill Points. In order to use a skill, a character needs to generate Skill Points by using their basic attack. It’s important to have a balanced team that has characters who don’t use their skill often or only in specific situations. This allows your main damage dealers to use their skills consistently, resulting in superior DPS.
The fourth and final factor to create the best team composition is elements. The game’s elemental system is crucial to success in harder content such as Simulated Universe or Forgotten Hall. Building a team around a boss’s elemental weakness is essential to deal maximum damage. Break builds are especially strong early on, as it’s easier to stack the effect to over 200%, allowing for massive damage to be dealt when breaking the boss’s toughness bar.
Knowing these factors, let’s go into detail about the best team comps for early game in Honkai Star Rail.
Best Team Comps for Early Game
At the start of Honkai: Star Rail, players need not worry much about team building, as they are limited to the characters given to them during the prologue. However, once players reach the point where they unlock Warping and make their first 20 pulls, they will gain more freedom to build their team according to their preferences.
It is worth noting that players need to complete up to 50 pulls on the Beginner Warp banner to obtain one of the seven available 5★ characters. While some players may have good fortune and get a 5★ character within the first 20 pulls, it is more likely that most players will need to complete all 50 pulls to obtain their first 5★ character, minus the Trailblazer.
Team Comp Option #1

Character | Roll | Element |
Dan Heng | Main DPS (single) | Wind |
Trailblazer | Sub DPS (AoE) | Physical |
Serval | Sub DPS (AoE) – Trailblazer alternative | Lightning |
Asta | Offensive Support | Fire |
March 7th | Shield | Ice |
The first half of the planet Jarilo-VI has enemies weak to Physical and/or Wind, making Trailblazer and Dan Heng effective. However, as more AoE and Lightning-weak enemies appear, adding Serval instead of the Physical MC is a good idea. Serval is a strong AoE damage dealer and can even be used with Dan Heng instead of the Physical MC. It is recommended to level up the Physical MC as the Fire variant will be needed later.
Team Comp Option #2

Character | Roll | Element |
Dan Heng | Main DPS (single) | Wind |
Trailblazer | Sub DPS (AoE) | Physical |
Servel | Sub DPS (AoE) – Trailblazer alternative | Lightning |
Natasha | Heal | Physical |
March 7th | Shield | Ice |
After completing the last main story mission in Jarilo-VI, the Fire variant of the Main Character will be unlocked. This character is a Shielder/Taunter/Breaker hybrid and is one of the strongest characters in the game. Once unlocked, this character should always be in your best comp list.
Team Comp Option #3

Character | Roll | Element |
Den Heng | Main DPS (single) | Wind |
Trailblazer | Shield/Breaker | Fire |
Natasha | Heal | Physical |
March 7th | Shield | Ice |
Your main DPS should be changed based on the enemies’ weaknesses. If enemies are weak to Lightning, use Serval. With Dan Heng and Fire MC, there should be enough elemental coverage. The Turtle Team with three defensive support characters is recommended for safety rather than building a hypercarry team. Using any other team in the Simulated Universe will result in suffering.
Team Comp Option #4

Character | Roll | Element |
Den Heng | Main DPS (single) | Wind |
Servel | Sub DPS (AoE) | Lightning |
Trailblazer | Shield/Breaker | Fire |
Natasha | Heal | Physical |
Team Comp Option #5

Character | Roll | Element |
Sushang | Main DPS (single) | Physical |
Trailblazer | Shield/Breaker | Fire |
Tingyun | Offensive Support | Lightning |
Natasha | Heal | Physical |
If you happen to obtain Sushang or Tingyun, early game progression much easier. Sushang is a useful alternative to Dan Heng when a Physical Attacker is needed and is considered the best 4★ damage dealer with a Break Effect build. As for Tingyun, one of the Shielders (most likely March 7th) can be replaced to give a massive boost to your carry due to her buffs being simply overbearing. However, it’s important to note that buffers like Tingyun and Bronya aren’t as effective at the beginning and require the main carry to have some stats to enhance. Once your level reaches around 40 or 50, it’s safe to start utilizing Tingyun’s potential.
