It’s been years since Grand Theft Auto V launched and the game is going strong thanks to GTA Online. However, GTA 5 PC version is still facing errors and issues like game exited unexpectedly, crashes, no audio, Err_Gfx_D3D_Init, the app already running, and more. Here I have compiled an updated list of GTA V errors and issues that players are experiencing along with their fixes and workarounds.
GTA 5 No Audio, Stuttering, And Fixes
Grand Theft Auto V is one of the biggest game releases of all time and with GTA Online the game is going strong even when 2019 is coming to an end.
Despite multiple patches and optimization, GTA 5 is still facing errors like game exited unexpectedly, crashes, no audio, and more.
The following are the errors and issues that players are experiencing with GTA 5 along with their fixes and workarounds.
Some players might be experiencing random crashes with GTA V. Some get the fatal error while others get DirectX Device Removed Error. The reason for the game to crash could that you are trying to play GTA 5 on an old GPU or the GPU is overclocked.
If the GPU is overclocked then revert it back to its default clock speed. If the GPU is factory overclocked or just old then try reducing the graphical quality.
If reducing the graphical quality doesn’t help then try reducing the GPU clock speed by 100 MHz using overclocking utilities like MSI Afterburner. This should resolve the GTA 5 crash issue.
In case you don’t want to mess with the GPU clock, then players can try limiting the max FPS the GPU can render from the game. GTA 5 allows players to limit the game’s FPS through the in-game menu. However, for more control players can cap FPS through the GPU driver.
Open Nvidia Control Panel > Manage 3D Settings > Program Settings > select Grand Theft Auto V. Look for “Max FPS Limit” and turn it on. After that, players will have to set a value. If you are planning to lock the game’s FPS below 60 then I recommend that you cap it at 30 FPS. Apply this change and the GTA 5 will stop crashing.
Crash At Startup, GTA 5 Exited Unexpectedly Fix
This is another GTA V error that players are experiencing. This can be easily resolved by just giving the game and the Rockstar Launcher the administrative rights.
Right-click on GTA 5 exe > Properties > Compatibility Tab. Check “Run this program as an administrator” and click apply. Do the same for Rockstar launcher exe and start the game and the issue will be resolved.
Another reason for GTA 5 to exit unexpectedly is that the MFPLAT.dll is either corrupted or missing from your PC. Install the latest Visual C++ redistributable to fix this error.
You can also fix this by manually downloading the aforementioned .dll file and placing it in the game’s folder. However, doing this can be risky as you might download malicious software disguised are the file you require. If the MFPLAT.dll doesn’t do the trick then the culprit might be “MFCORE.dll” or “MFREADWRIGHT.dll”
If this doesn’t resolve your issue then chances are you are part of the Windows Insider program and the beta features aren’t really compatible with Grand Theft Auto 5. Opt-out of the Insider Program and the issue will be resolved.
Even if this doesn’t work then there is a slight chance that your OS version you are using isn’t compatible with the game. Try updating or re-installing another version of the OS and the issue will be resolved.
App is Already Running Fix
This is an error that GTA V players are experiencing while trying to play the game. the fix for this is simple, just run Steam as an administrator. Right-click on Steam’s exe and select “Run as administrator”.
If this doesn’t resolve the problem then open the task manager and see if the game is running. Click on it and then click on “End Task”. Now start the game and it should be running fine.
While this seems like a complex GTA 5 error but there a couple of solutions that might work for you. The first fix is very simple, just go to the game’s install folder and delete d3dcsx_46.dll and d3dcompiler_46.dll and then verify game files from Steam and the error should be resolved.
If this doesn’t fix the problem then the issue is the GPU, it’s either old or it’s overclocked. If it’s overclocked then just revert it back to its default clock speed.
If the GPU isn’t overclocked then install MSI Afterburner and reduce the GPU clock speed. This is trial and error and you should start by reducing the Memory Clock speed and core clock by 100 MHz. Ideally, players won’t have to reduce it to more than 200 Mhz. This will fix the Err_Gfx_D3D_Init with GTA 5.
If reducing the core clock and memory clock speed isn’t an option for you. Then you can just lock the game at 30 FPS through the in-game menu. Locking the game at 30 FPS reduces the load on the GPU and the CPU and has a better chance of the game not crashing with the aforementioned error.
No Audio Fix
According to GTA 5 players, when they start the game there is no sound at all. The reason for no audio in GTA 5 could be that you have enabled Windows Sonic for headphones.
Right-click on the sound icon on the bottom right of the desktop and hover the mouse cursor over the spatial sound. If Windows Sonic for headphones is selected just select off. Start the game and the no audio issue with the game will be resolved.
Low FP, Stuttering, Performance Fix
The PC version of Grand Theft Auto 5 is well-optimized and despite that, it’s facing performance issues like random FPS drops and stuttering.
Follow the instructions ahead which will resolve the random FPS drops and potentially eliminate stuttering. First, make sure you are using the latest GPU driver and there is no background process using too much of your HDD or CPU.
First, launch the game and disable in-game v.sync and close the game. Open Nvidia Control Panel > Manage 3D Settings > Program Settings. Select the game from the drop-down list and make the following changes.
Set “Power Management Mode” to “Prefer Maximum Performance”
Set “Texture Filtering- Quality” to “High Performance”
Set Vertical sync to “Fast”
This will improve the game’s performance and eliminate stuttering. Note that Fast sync allows the GPU to render as much FPS for the game as it can but without screen tearing.
Also if the rendered FPS is higher than your display’s refresh rate, then it’ll only display frames supported by the display while the rest is wasted. Meaning, if the GPU is rendering the game at 80 FPS and your display supports a 60 Hz refresh rate, then the GPU will only display 60 FPS while the rest of the 20 FPS aren’t displayed.
Enabling Fast sync can really improve performance and also helps with the input latency. However, the “Fast” option might not work for everyone as you need a decent CPU and GPU to be able to fully utilize this option.
Offline Mode Error Fix
According to Grand Theft Auto 5 players, they are unable to play GTA online as the game pops up offline mode error. First, try using a VPN and it has solved the issue for a lot of players who were getting the offline mode error with GTA V.
If the error persists, then go to C:\Users\”your username”\Documents\Rockstar Games. Delete the Social Club folder. After that, launch the game and it’ll create this folder again and the offline mode error will be fixed.
In case the issue persists, then try deleting the Social Club folder at C:\Program Files (x86)\Rockstar Games and C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games. This will fix the error.
Missing .dll File Fix
GTA 5 players are reporting that they are getting errors at launch telling them they have missing .dll files like MSVCP140.dll and Steam_api64.dll. These missing .dll errors can be fixed easily. Players have to install the latest Visual C++ Redistributables both x86 and x64 versions. This will fix the error.
Alternatively, players can manually download these files and place them in the game’s install folder. This will fix the missing .dll file error with the game.
