Illuminated Torment is the first challenge in the Root of Nightmares raid that you need for the Dream Warrior seal. It is completed during the Cataclysm encounter. Successfully completing the Illuminated Torment challenge in Master RoN will also reward you with a guaranteed Adept Weapon. This guide will help you learn everything you need to know about completing the Illuminated Torment challenge in Destiny 2: Root of Nightmares raid.

Destiny 2: Root of Nightmares Illuminated Torment

Before we begin, please note that this guide assumes that you know how this encounter works. If you do not, you can refer to our Cataclysm Encounter guide.

Illuminated Torment is a fairly straightforward challenge. As the name suggests, the challenge requires you to kill Tormentors only if you have the Field of Light buff. This is way easier than it sounds like but it does require a little extra coordination. If someone without the Field of Light lands the final blow, you will see Challenge Failed in the lower-left corner of the screen.

There is not a whole lot that you will need to change to complete the challenge. You will need 1-2 players to connect the Nodes while the others deal with Psions, Champions, and normal adds. There are a few different ways you can complete the Illuminated Torment challenge.

How to Complete

You can assign one player to connect all the Nodes while the other five deal with everything else in the room. These players need to destroy Tormentor’s weakpoints — Arbalest, Izanagi, etc. are good for this — and lower its HP. Once the Tormentor is at low HP, 2-3 players need to run to the player doing the Nodes to get the Field of Light buff before finishing off the Tormentor. Keep on repeating the same process until you are done with the encounter.

Alternatively, if you have a fast player on Nodes, you can simply not kill the first Tormentor before the first set of Nodes is completed. In this way, the entire team can receive the buff when starting the second set of Nodes and keep on repeating. If you have a Tormentor alive in the end, you can simply focus on completing the Nodes as it will despawn when the encounter finishes.

Master Mode Tips

There is nothing much that changes in the Master Mode. You will just need to deal with one extra Barrier Champion and that’s all! You will also be capped but if you are attempting this content, this should not bother you too much.

Loot PSA

Since you will be able to enhance Perks on Adept Weapons in the future, we recommend saving any decent rolls you get from completing the challenge in Master RoN.
