How to Complete Cataclysm in Root of Nightmares Raid (First Encounter Guide)

Cataclysm leaves a lot to be desired!

Cataclysm is the first encounter of the new Root of Nightmares raid. The first fireteam to complete it during the Contest did it in under 20 minutes which should give you an idea of how simple it is. Still, for those of who are stuck on it, we have you covered! This guide will help you learn all there is about completing the first encounter (Cataclysm) in Root of Nightmares.

Completing Cataclysm in Root of Nightmares

Immediately after starting the encounter, you will see a Sweeping Terror debuff on your screen. You will also see two shielded Psions in the area — they can be in the middle, left or right. To kill these Psions, you must enter their shields as you cannot damage from outside their shields. Killing both the Psions will spawn a Tormentor. You need to kill it in order to extend your Sleeping Terror debuff. If you do not extend this timer, you wipe. You will also see various spores scattered throughout the entire area.

Aside from all this, you will see a small orb in front of you. Shooting this orb will give you a buff called Field of Light. The person with the Field of Light buff will need to head over to a spore that the orb is pointing in the direction of and shoot it. It is important not to shoot the orb multiple times as it will destroy it completely, requiring you to start over — shooting it once is plenty. After shooting a spore, you will that an orb has grown there. From there, return to the orb that has an aura around it, reacquire Field of Light buff, and move to the next spore. You are essentially connecting the dots and nothing else.

In the meanwhile, your other teammates are dealing with waves of Shadow Legion, Barrier Champions, killing shielded Psions, and defeating Tormentors to extend your timer. You need to keep on doing it until you are done. There is not much going on in this encounter aside from this. After you are done, collect your loot and push to the next encounter.

Faster Way

You can also multiple runners to connect the nodes, spores, whatever you want to call. In this way, you will never have to worry about dealing with Psions, Tormentors, etc. but this does require a lot of practice, knowing all the possible spawn locations of the spores, etc. While you are free to try it out, this is not something we recommend that to new raiders.

Recommended Loadouts

As for loadouts, there is not much you need beside weapons that can clear enemies quickly. Things such as LMGs, Waveframe GLs, roaming Supers, etc. are all very good. You can also run something like a Divinity paired with Arbalest, Izanagi’s Burden to deal with Barrier Champions and Tormentors effectively.

This is how to complete Cataclysm in the new Root of Nightmares raid in Destiny 2: Lightfall. If you have any other questions, be sure to let us know in the comments below!
