Farming Essence of the Oversoul is one of the rewards that you get for completing the Crota’s End raid encounters and associated triumphs. Since the drop rate is pretty low, trying to run through the whole raid over and over again is not the best way of farming Essence of the Oversoul.
To farm Essence of the Oversoul in Destiny 2, we recommend running the Ir Yut, The Deathsinger encounter. This is fairly easy and takes a couple of minutes to complete. A wide selection of weapons is effective in this encounter, so you should not have a hard time. You can run this encounter over and over again until you have farmed 20x Essence of the Oversoul.
Once you have farmed enough, you will need to complete the raid and defeat Crota. Interact with the sword to get the exotic. Getting the catalyst for the weapon is a complete questline on its own.
