How to Fix Call of Duty Modern Warfare DEV ERROR 6165

Call of Duty Modern Warfare has its fair share of errors that many players report and DEV ERROR 6165 is one of them. Players report that the Dev error pops up when they launch either the campaign or a multiplayer match. Dev error 6165 usually occurs due to server problems, game folder or file corruption, interruption from third-party software, or outdated/corrupt GPU drivers. In this guide, I will help players with how to fix the Dev error 6165 in Modern Warfare.

MW DEV ERROR 6165 Fixes You Can Try

With millions of players online, some of them are bound to experience errors and issues like Dev errors, crashes, and more. Dev error 6165 is one error a lot of Call Of Duty Modern Warfare players are reporting. As I mentioned above, there are multiple reasons why this particular error can pop up. The following are the fixes that PC players can try and fix the Dev error 6165.

Check Server Status

First, you must rule out whether there are any issues with the server before heading to any other fix to resolve the‘DEV ERROR 6165’ in Call of Duty Modern Warfare. If you are experiencing the error while connecting to Activision servers, the reason behind the Dev error 6165 is the server is probably due to server maintenance. To confirm, you can check out Activision’s status page to see if the server is officially down or not. Open the page, head to the drop-down menu, and select Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Then, check the status page to see any announcements of a down server or green checkmarks.

There is a possibility that the error is platform specific like Steam, Epic Games, or Battle.Net in particular having issues, leading to the ‘DEV ERROR 6165’. Click on the platform icon under Server Status by Network to confirm the status. In case there are any issues are detected, then all there’s left for you to do is wait for the server or the platform to get back to normal.

Scan and Repair

Corrupt game files can also lead to Dev Error 6165 in Call of Duty Modern Warfare, you’ll need to perform a scan and repair to fix the error. Call of Duty Modern Warfare launcher (Battle.Net) has a scan and repair tool to do that. First, quit Call of Duty Modern Warfare, open Battle.net, and click the Games Tab. Head to Options > Scan & Repair. Confirm and click Start Scan. When the process is over, restart your PC and then launch Modern Warfare, and Dev error 6165 is now fixed.

Run The Game In Clean Boot Mode

Another fix for Dev Error 6165 is performing a clean boot, which restarts the system with minimal drivers and start-up tasks, thereby reducing the chances of the error popping up again. Press Windows and R keys simultaneously > type “msconfig” and press Enter > click on Services > check the Hide all Microsoft services option. After that, click on Disable All > go to Startup tab > click on Task Manager > right-click on all programs one by one and disable them. Then head to System Configuration and click on Apply, and then OK. Restart your system, launch Modern Warfare, and the Dev Error 6165 is now fixed.

Force The Game To Run With DirectX11

Modern Warfare Dev Error 6165 can pop up if a user has a medium-tier GPU struggling to render the game with DirectX 12. This can be easily fixed by forcing Modern Warfare to render using DirectX 11. However, making this change will lock you out of Ray Tracing options as they can only be enabled with DX12.

To force Call of Duty Modern Warfare to run with DirectX 11, close the game > open the Battle.net client, and sign in. Click on the Call of Duty title from the Library and click on Options. Then select Game Settings and ensure Game Settings is selected from the vertical menu. Then, check the box next to “Additional Command Line Arguments.” and type -d3d11. Then, save the changes and then launch Call of Duty Modern Warfare, and the Dev Error 6165 error will be fixed.

Run The Game In Windowed Mode

Running Modern Warfare in fullscreen mode can cause trigger Dev Error 6165 and can be fixed by running the game in Windowed mode. Launch Modern Warfare, open in-game Settings, and go to the Graphics sub-menu. Click on Display > Display Mode > select Windowed from the list of options and save the changes. This will fix the MW Dev error 6165.

Turn Off Cache Spot And Cache Sun Settings

Cache Spot and Cache Sun graphics settings can also cause the Dev error 6165 while playing Modern Warfare. Disable these graphics settings and the error will be fixed. Open in-game Options > Graphics > scroll down and disable Cache Spot and Cache Sun settings. Apply the changes, restart MW, and dev error 6165 is now fixed.

Disable In-Game Overlays

Almost every piece of PC software related to video games has an in-game overlay. These overlays can be useful but often they interfere with games and cause errors like Dev error 6165. Disable all in-game overlays like Steam in-game overlay, GeForce Experience overlay, and Discord in-game overlays if they are enabled to fix the Modern Warfare Dev error 6165.

To disable Steam in-game overlay, open Steam > settings > In-game > uncheck “Enable the Steam overlay while in-game.”

To disable GeForce Experience Overlay, open GeForce Experience> click on the Gear icon next to your username > General > turn off the “IN-GAME Overlay” option.

Update/Reinstall GPU Drivers

An outdated or corrupt GPU driver is another reason behind the Dev error 6165 in Modern Warfare. Update your GPU driver if you haven’t already or reinstall the driver to rule out corrupt GPU driver. Ensure to do a clean installation so that settings from the previous installation don’t cause problems.

Disable GPU Overclock

If you have overclocked your GPU then it is most likely the reason behind MW Dev Error 6165. Disable overclock and revert the GPU back to its default clocks. Sometimes, GPUs are factory overlooked, and in that case, open Nvidia Control Panel > Help > Debug mode. This will force the GPU to use stock clocks recommended by Nvidia and the error will be fixed.

Limit Max FPS

Playing Modern Warfare at an unlocked FPS might be the reason why Dev error 6165 is bothering you. Limit the game’s maximum FPS and the issue will be fixed. Players can cap the game’s FPS through in-game graphics options or through Nvidia Control Panel. Open Nvidia Control Panel > Manage 3D Settings > Program Settings > Select Modern Warfare from the list > Scroll down to Max Frame Rate Option and set a value for it. Apply the changes and MW dev error 6165 is now fixed.

Note: The Value you input should be 1/2, 1/3rd, or 1/4th of your display refresh rate, however, ignore this if you are using a Freesync or Gsync display.
