Baldur’s Gate 3 is based on the Dungeons and Dragons ruleset and can get a bit intimidating if you have not played the previous game or are not familiar with the different mechanics or systems of the game. In this Baldur’s Gate 3 beginner’s guide, we go over some tips and tricks that will help you get started and survive Faerun.
Baldur’s Gate 3 Tips And Tricks
The following are some useful tips and tricks that you should keep in mind when playing Baldur’s Gate 3.
Making The Perfect Build Isn’t Everything
D&D can be very tough, especially for new players but making the perfect build is not everything since no one build is going to get you through the game. You need to rely on making the most of your party and making smart decisions. Pick the character combination you find the most interesting and go with it rather than trying to match the races with classes perfectly.
Save Often
In Baldur’s Gate 3, your actions have consequences and you really never know what is around the corner. That is why we recommend saving often so you can load up a game when things go south. Save the game before talking to companions if you are interested in romancing them. Having a couple of saves to fall back on is going to be very helpful.
You Don’t Need To Know D&D
Baldur’s Gate 3 is based on the 5th edition of Dungeons & Dragons but you do not need to know everything about the table-top game in order to play. Baldur’s Gate 3 does everything for you including managing the character sheet, dice roller, and being the Dungeon Master. All you have to do is click on things. If you are familiar with Dungeons & Dragons then you know what the game has in store for you but even if you don’t, you can still play the game.
Spread Out In combat
You might be tempted to stick together as a unit but we recommend spreading out during combat so that enemies cannot attack your entire party. With that said, you should not be too far apart. Being spread out will give you more room to strategize.
Spells Are Usable Outside Combat
Spells are not only useful in combat but outside combat as well. You can use them to gain the favor of a character or to interact with your environment. You can even have a member of your party talk to animals.
Switch To Companion With Darkvision In The Dark
If you are in a dark area then you can switch to a character that has Darkvision to see better rather than looking for a torch or candle.
You Can’t Keep Everyone Happy
What you do is going to have an impact on your companions. A decision you make can make someone happy while making others upset. You can’t keep everyone happy and you should not try to. Keep a balance and focus on the companions that you want to keep. Gale, Wyll, and Shadowheart are ideal for moral and ethical runs. Lae’zel and Astarion don’t like it when you do something good.
You Can Sell Key Items And Kill Important Characters
Baldur’s Gate 3 lets you complete objectives in more than one way. So you are able to sell off key items and even kill important characters. The game is about choices you make so there is more than one way of doing something.
Long Rest Often
Long rests allow you to restore HP, Actions, and Spell Slots. Furthermore, they are the only way of progressing some personal quests and getting compassion scenes. So even if you do not need to rest for combat reasons, you should long rest often.
Inspiration Lets You Reroll
Characters can become inspired if you complete certain actions or make a decision that aligns with their background. Inspiration allows you to reroll when you fail a skill check, which makes it very useful. Inspiration moments are different from approval and do not affect each other.
Take Advantage Of High Ground And Backstab Damage
When in combat, you can take advantage of high ground. This will make it easier for you to hit enemies. If you have melee characters then they can also get behind enemies to deal bonus damage.
Take Advantage Of Your Surroundings
One of the best Baldur’s Gate 3 tips that we can give you is to make the most of your surroundings. If you find an enemy on a ledge then push them to their death. You can electrocute enemies in water or hide and ambush enemies to gain the upper hand. Using your environment can be the key to success.
Crimes Are Fine If You Get Away Unnoticed
If you commit crimes and no one sees you then there will be no consequences. Even though stealing is bad, if you pull it off without anyone noticing then it’s alright. You can get away with some major heists if you are clever about it.
You Can Throw Potions
If a party member needs a potion but does not have one then another member of the party can throw a potion at them. If members are close enough then they can be healed as long as they are in the splash zone. You can also throw harmful potions at enemies. You can do all this by using the Throw Bonus Action.
