If you’re a veteran of 4X games in general, a lot of the mechanics implemented in Age of Wonders: Planetfall will seem familiar. While AOW: Planetfall doesn’t present a steep learning curve, there has always been a very unique way combat has been presented in the AOW series and Age of Wonders: Planetfall is no different – picking up from where its predecessors left off.

Age of Wonders: Planetfall Combat

Planetfall provides two integrated approaches to combat within the 4X grand map. The traditional Civilizational-style of hex on hex interaction with battles being auto-resolved using a “rock-paper-scissor” style system to determine combat winners or the signature ‘tactical’ approach.

In Planetfall, you can conduct the battle on a granular scale, commanding each unit individually on an RTS style map while utilizing the environment to provide bonuses to your units in a turn-based XCOM-esque battle. And while your approach to each battle will depend on which race you play, there are certain general paths that you should be aware of.

Let’s take a general look at what you should be looking at to win in tactical battles in Age of Wonders: Planetfall.

Heroes Rise and Cartographers Take Note!

When entering a tactical battle, you will be greeted with a randomly-generated map whose theme will be based on the hex your units were standing on when the battle was initiated. An example would be that if your units initiated battle on a forest tile, the map generated for the battle will have a forest environment complete with fixtures that would be relevant to a forest.

Remember not only the units on the tile will be in the battle but also units in any adjacent tiles will also be in the battle, so plan your battles accordingly and be wary of adjacent enemy units before initiating combat.

Also, harkening back to a few RTS games of old, the Age of Wonders series has Hero units. Individual units capable of greatly boosting your armies, changing the entire battlefield, throwing enemy units into disarray or some combination of the three. Age of Wonders: Planetfall gives these hero units a heavy sci-fi twist.

You can mod them like regular units with whatever you have available, though what is unique is that Heroes gain experience, level up, and develop new abilities. What they develop is entirely up to you and the playstyle you want to adopt. Want to lead an always aggro army, rushing enemies down. Build your hero with abilities that enhance unit movement, damage, and give the Hero the ability to stagger enemies.

Tactics, Tactics, and more Tactics

Battles are all turn-based and the comparison to XCOM is quite warranted. Most tactical battles play out as smaller XCOM squad missions and on average end in around 5-6 turns. Therefore, your playstyle whatever it is should not worry about long drawn-out battles but rather a very efficient use of the resources you have made available to yourself prior to initiation of the battle.

The units you bring with you into battle need to be well thought out before you initiate or defend. Ensure that your armies have a balanced set of unit types and have cover from other armies in adjacent hexes, remember the lone wolf will always have a difficult time winning.

Most of the units in Planetfall have a few simple abilities in combat which play into either shoot on sight or wait till an enemy unit shows up and shoot. For example, the Dvar Foremen can heal and their Trencher compatriots have an ability to dig in and create a protective barrier around their position.

When utilized at the same time they create a strong rearguard that melee units usually can’t get near enough to hit. This, in turn, could allow your Hero to do what you need it to do, whether that’s rushing in and dealing massive melee damage or sniping with great accuracy from afar.

Remember to utilize the environment for different bonuses and defenses for units while also perhaps creating hurdles for enemy units and allowing yourself better line-of-sight. Then there are operations, which add another layer of decision-making and strategy to the turn-based fights, acting the same way as spells did in the original fantasy-based Age of Wonders games.

Although not available in the first turn and also until you research them, you won’t have much in terms of variety, but later into a game, they allow all manner of buffs and special attacks.

Plan ahead, think on your feet and make sure to equip your soldiers with the latest and greatest, these are the take-away for combat in Planetfall.

Although in truth you could skip all of this and just auto-resolve battles like in traditional CIV games, but then where’s the fun in that? Happy hunting on the new planet!

Age Of Wonders: Planetfall is out now and it can be a complex game if you have not played it before. There are a few things that you can do early in the game that will make sure that you win. In this Age Of Wonders: Planetfall Strategy Guide we are going to walk you through everything that you should do in order to win every game.

The ladder to absolute dominance is a long and complex one, with many challenges and conflicts. Age of Wonders: Planetfall encourages its Commanders to explore every option and opportunity strategically. This type of thinking is applied to development of the empire, researching for resources, making pacts with other settlements and minimizing losses in war.

Age Of Wonders: Planetfall Strategy To Win

Age Of Wonders: Planetfall has plenty of changes, so returning players will need some help as well. That is perfectly fine. Stick to this guide and you should be on your way to victory in no time. Whether you’re a returning veteran who might want to brush up on the new changes in this installment of the series, or a first-time newcomer who might get overwhelmed at the number of mechanics in the game, we’ve got it all covered for you guys in our Age of Wonders: Planetfall Guide.

Happiness Structures Go A Long Way

Building a mightly army is fun and all but it is not going to be worth it if your own people start to rebel against you. That is why you need to ensure that people are happy with you from the very start of the game. The problem here is that the happiness of the population declines rapidly no matter what you do. You need to build structures in order to reverse that.

The Recreational Dome is a great example of a happiness building and in some missions and scenarios, you will be able to build it from the start. You should do so as soon as possible. If the Recreational Dome option is not available then you can get it by researching Frontier Facilities in the Society research tree. It is pretty straight forward and simple but this can impact your game in a huge way down the line.

The following are the main options that increase the happiness of a colony in Age Of Wonders: Planetfall and where you can research them:

Happiness Buildings Where To Research Them
Recreational Dome Frontier Facilities
Botanical Gardens Environmental Conditioning
Virtual Entertainment Plaza  Colonist Care

Once you have completed one of these happiness buildings, you should produce some low-level units which will be part of your army. These units can be used to replace the ones that are dead. They can be used to defend your capital or scout the surrounding areas for resources.

Defend Your Cities

Leaving your cities open to an attack is a common mistake that people make. I do not blame them. In the early game, it seems logical to strike when the enemy is weak and can easily be overpowered with brute force and numbers. While that is an option that you can choose to go with, remember to leave some troops behind to defend your cities, especially the capital.

Age Of Wonders: Planetfall Strategy

You might think that there are no enemy forces nearby but it only takes a while for them to pop up out of nowhere and retreating to protect your city can cost you a major battle. In the early game, a single unit is more than enough but one you progress you will need stacks and heroes in order to defend your lands from potential invaders.

Scouting For Resources From The Start

Like other games in this genre, resources are important and scarce in Age Of Wonders: Planetfall and it is a wise strategy to get as many resources as soon as possible. From the start, you should send out a scout to pick up any resources that are not defended. This will give you a major boost and will help you through the game.

A single unit with high movement speed is all that you need in order to do this. Kir’ko can summon a Whisper of Discord by researching Whispers and Visions on the Psynumbra branch of the Military tree. The Dvar can deploy Trenchers by researching Drudges on the top branch of the Military tree.

Scout units are cheap and you can produce them in early game whenever possible. Keep in mind that you should set your research and unit production at the start of the turn. before you start exploring. Taking over research nodes or finding caches can help boost your production and research. This will give you an edge over your rivals.

Manage Influence

Your colony does need energy and other resources but as you progress through the game, you will quickly learn that influence is a very important resource that needs to be managed as well. You will find one or more NPC factions that operate independently of other AI players. They will be one or more of the following:

  • Autonom
  • Growth
  • Paragon
  • Psi-Fish
  • Spacers

These factions are not looking to rule the map and they will sell you units and mods. All you need to do is be on good terms with them by completing their quests or offering them tributes. You can spend influence and buy high-level units without spending any energy or waiting turns. The units you get via influence spawn at your capital immediately. These units can be used to win a battle or defend your capital.

When you become friends with the Psi-Fish you can get the tier 3 elite siren unit for just 80 influence. That is much cheaper and much quicker than if you produced one on your own.

The Path To Victory Needs To Be Decided Early On

Campaign missions have specific conditions that you need to take care of in order to win the game but if you are playing a random map then the following are your paths to victory:

  • Total Conquest
  • Unification
  • Destruction (Purification)

Other than the first one, you need to plan ahead because you need to complete the respective research. Here is what you need to know about the three paths to victory that you can choose in Age Of Wonders: Planetfall, you can plan your strategy accordingly.

Total Conquest

This one is pretty simple you need to dominate your enemies. Work with your allies to gain power over the map and be on top at the end to win.

Planetary Unification Protocol can be researched early by unlocking Dawn Of A New Union at the top Doctrine branch in the society research tree. It does take longer to implement when compared to the destruction path. There are three major limitations that you need to keep in mind with this path.

  1. You can’t take resources and structures from other players, and you need to forge alliances and spend influence to compliment other factions
  2. Cannot be at war with players or NPC factions.
  3. Need 3 dwellings under alliance control.

If you want to win this way then you will need to take a defensive stance and only expand where there are hostile marauders that do not belong to any faction on the map.

Next, we have the purification path to victory. Researching Planetary Purification takes longer to start and it is found at the end of the military research tree. There are no restrictions for this course of playing the game and hence is much easier.

If you do plan to take this path to victory then keep in mind that all resources are culled by 30% during the countdown for purification that lasts 10 turns. You will need to plan accordingly in order to counter this. You will not be able to produce many units during this phase. Other factions will try to destroy you before you can wipe out the planet and all life on it.

This marks the end of our Age Of Wonders: Planetfall Strategy Guide.

The Nintendo Switch Lite was announced recently. It is a smaller handheld-only device with the joycons integrated into it. Nintendo mentioned that the new device has a longer battery time but then we also got a Nintendo Switch model that has a longer battery life as well. A teardown of the Nintendo Switch Lite reveals that the battery is smaller than the original Switch.

Switch Lite is listed in the US and needs to be certified by the FCC for network communication components. That is where this information comes from. The teardown of the Nintendo Switch Lite reveals that it has a heat pipe to keep the SoC cool. It seems to be some custom Nvidia Tegra X1 chip but we are not sure at this point as not much can be made out of the images.

We can see that there is a small fan in the device that will keep the SoC from overheating. Interestingly, while the rated battery life is claimed to be longer than the original Nintendo Switch, the upcoming device has a smaller battery. The battery is 13.6Wh rather than 16Wh. It is more than likely that Nintendo is now using a more efficient chip. It is also worth mentioning that the Nintendo Switch Lite does have a smaller screen so that is another factor that can account to the longer battery life of the product.

Nintendo Switch Lite Teardown

The Tegra chip has a lot of thermal paste on it and it is hard to tell whether this is a new chip or the same old one. We will know once and for all once the Nintendo Switch Lite is released on September 20th. So stay tuned for more information regarding the handheld.

Nintendo Switch Lite Teardown

We also talked about how the full experience of the Nintendo Switch Lite costs pretty much the same as the Nintendo Switch, so you really aren’t saving much if you buy the joycons. That is something that you should keep in mind if you are interested in getting one and are deciding between the two variants.

Another Interesting piece of information that you should know if that the original Nintendo Switch had the codename ODIN and the Switch Lite board mentions the codename VALI, which most likely stands for Valkyrie. It is possible that we will have a variant for Odin’s son Thor. Which is most likely going to be the Nintendo Switch Pro. The version that is expected to be more powerful. This part is speculation so do take this information with a grain of salt.

Nintendo has confirmed that no new hardware is coming out this year so Thor might release next year alongside the Xbox Scarlett and PS5.

WCCFTech’s Usman Pirzada did an exclusive piece speculating that AMD CEO Lisa Su might be leaving the company. He mentioned that Rick Bergman, former CEO of Synaptics, could replace her as the CEO of AMD but that does not seem to be the case. AMD CEO Lisa Su has denied these claims.

The article was shared on Twitter and Lisa Su was quick to respond. She mentioned that there is no truth to these rumors and that she is here to stay. She might have teased the upcoming high-end graphics cards in the process. Here is what she had to say in response to the post by WCCFTech:

Just for the record, zero truth to this rumor. I love AMD and the best is yet to come!

The best could mean anything but keeping in mind that AMD Lisa Su has confirmed that high-end Navi is on track and is going to release in the future, it is more than likely that it is these upcoming graphics cards that she is talking about. AMD CEO Lisa Su is one of the most successful and competent tech CEOs in the industry right now and it stepping down now would not make sense.

AMD just released the Ryzen 3000 series CPUs and the Radeon RX 5700 graphics cards. For a limited time, if you buy one of these products then you get 3 months worth of Game Pass for PC for free. You will be able to play games like Gear 5 at launch. Not to mention the more than 100 other titles that are also part of the library.

AMD has been doing great and the new products are very impressive indeed. Interestingly Raja Koduri has just confirmed that not only will Intel’s upcoming Xe graphics cards compete with AMD but with Nvidia at well. Intel is looking to target every price point which means that Intel is looking to take a jab at the top of the line Nvidia card. That should be very interesting indeed.

Bully 2 has been rumored for a while but we have not heard anything from Rockstar about the game. That is nothing new. Rockstar is generally pretty secretive about its projects and you never really know what the company is working on. An employee at the company has now mentioned that Rockstar is planning to release Bully 2 during the holidays of 2020.

Interestingly the Xbox Scarlett is coming out during the same time which means that Rockstar is going to release the game on current and next-generation consoles. Current generation console gamers are going to buy the game and so are the people that make the move to the new hardware. So it is a win-win for Rockstar. This is not new, we saw the same thing when the Xbox One came out. GTAV was released on the 360 and the Xbox One.

Bully 2 Release

While leaks can be vague at times, the Rockstar employee left a very specific message for the release of Bully 2. The message is as follows:

They way they are going about this has completely changed. As it stands, they are aiming to release their next-generation game during the holiday season of 2020.

This does make a lot of sense. This explains why we have not got an announcement so far. The timing aligns with the release of the Xbox Scarlett and the PS5. Interestingly 2 sources have the same information so they could be onto something here. YouTuber SWEGTA did not reveal the name of his source at Rockstar, for obvious reasons but from what we have heard, the timing seems right and things do add up.

This is still a leak, so you should take this information with a grain of salt. It is also worth mentioning that this is the current plan. At Rockstar, plans can always change. It will be interesting to see whether we do get a release for Bully 2 in 2020. If the game is planned for the holiday season then we might get an announcement later this year or early 2020.

The same Rockstar employee recently talked about how Rockstar was working on the game but then it was scrapped. Rockstar might be working on it again. Rumors suggest that the upcoming game will be as big as GTAV.

Ninja might be the biggest Fortnite streamer but when it comes to hardcore skill in an FPS game Dr Disrespect is the two-time champion. Not to mention that watching the guy play is very entertaining indeed. Dr Disrespect recently talked about how Ninja has moved on to stream on Mixer. He said that he would make the move if he was offered a similar deal or something better.

I love Dr Disrespect and he is a great streamer but I do not think that he will get a deal similar to what Ninja got if the rumors about Ninja’s deal are true. Jacksepticeye was approached by Mixer a while back but then Microsoft mentioned that the money had already been spent. That could mean that the Mixer is only interested in Ninja for now.

Dr Disrespect Mixer

Mixer could offer a deal to Dr Disrespect and other streamers, it is a matter of time. Ninja’s deal is already paying off. He has brought a lot of viewers to Mixer so I do not see why Microsoft would not make deals with other streamers. Here is what Dr Disrespect said about moving to Mixer:

Let’s say a move to the Doc to Mixer… let’s just like theoretically say it right… the number would have to be crazy. Like, I’m talking… I don’t know what Ninja got, but it’s got to be at Ninja’s level or higher. I mean it’s just a bigger, stronger brand.

Dr Disrespect is one of the big names on Twitch right now and he would be ideal for Mixer if he did get an offer. We have been hearing rumors that Mixer is going to get more streamers onboard so Dr Disrespect might get an offer soon. There is no way of knowing for sure. let’s wait and see what happens.

Ninja has made the move to Mixer and we talked about how much money he might have been offered to make the transition. It turns out that Ninja was not the only one that was contacted. Jacksepticeye was also offered a deal of some sort to create content on Mixer but Microsoft backed by at the end. The company did not say no but mentioned that the money had already been spent. Now we know where all that money went. Jack could give us an insight into how much money was offered.

This is not surprising because Mixer would need to have some sort of backup plan if Ninja did not join. Jacksepticeye might not be the biggest Fortnite streamer in the work but he is a gamer with great content and a lot of reach. People like to watch his content. I for one am a fan myself and I enjoy the Irish accent a lot. Not to mention his charismatic personality.

Jacksepticeye shared this information with PewDiePie and Pewds talked about it in a recent video. Here is what he had to say regarding the whole Mixer affair:

Ninja’s streaming on Mixer?. Oh, that’s funny. I saw it in the comments, and I didn’t understand. I mean, good for him. Jack told me yesterday. Mixer came to me with a lot of money, and all of a sudden they say no. Now we know where that money went. That’s funny. They didn’t say ‘no’ to him, they just said like – we spent the money already.

Now we know where all that money went. Ninja was offered an exclusive streaming deal. Pewds himself streams exclusively on DLive so exclusive deals do make sense. Ninja has quickly become the most subscribed streamer on Mixer and it is not really all that surprising.

Jacksepticeye Mixer

Ninja has a huge following but I for one would have liked to see Jacksepticeye get the deal. I am sure that this is not a popular opinion but I am going to say it anyway. Or maybe not? I already watch all my content on Netflix or YouTube so having Jacksepticeye move to Mixer would have been another site that I need to open up. It’s rather complicated I guess.

Ninja is the first to get an exclusive deal and now that the viewers are rolling in and Mixer is getting more traction, it is just a matter of time before more creator and streamers are offered similar deals. They might not be paid as much as Ninja, but they are still going to be approached. Just like our boy Jack.

Ninja recently announced that he has left Twitch and will stream exclusively on Mixer, Microsoft’s streaming platform. Ninja is one of the most popular Fortnite streamers in the world so you have to wonder, how much money did Microsoft pay Ninja to get him to stream exclusively on Mixer?

While we do not have the exact numbers, we do know how much money Ninja made in a year on Twitch and we have an idea of what kinds of terms he would agree to with Microsoft. Twitch is no small things for Ninja to leave and it is safe to say that he would be compensated for making the move to Mixer.

Here Is How Much Money Microsoft Paid Ninja To Stream On Mixer

So how much money did Microsoft pay Ninja to stream on Mixer? We know that in 2018, Ninja made around $10 million. Keeping that in mind, that would be the bare minimum that Microsoft must have paid Ninja to ditch Twitch. That does not account for the money that he makes on the platform. This is the money that Ninja is getting from Microsoft no matter how well he does on Mixer.

It does seem to be working. Ninja broke all the records on Mixer and became the most popular streamer on the platform before even starting his first-ever stream. Not to mention that there is a banner on the platform that highlights that Ninja will now stream on Mixer. So Mixer is marketing its platform with Ninja being a central part. That is not surprising at all keeping in mind how many people around the work watch him and how much viewership the streamer has brought in the past couple of days since the signed with Mixer.

Ninja Mixer Money

Mixer is an interesting platform and streamers that have used it have had very positive things to say about it. The only drawback was that the platform did not have the same viewer-base as Twitch. With Ninja bringing in the viewers, that could change soon. $10 million is the bare minimum that Microsoft would have offered Ninja.

Ninja has most likely signed a 3-year contract. Nothing less would make sense from the streamer’s point of view and nothing more would make sense from Mixer’s point of view. When it comes to eSports, a contract is typically for 3 years and I think that the same applies here.

There are some rumors that Microsoft paid Ninja $100 million for the deal and I would not be surprised if that is indeed the case. If this is indeed true then that would be for the duration of 3 years and not $100 million annually. YouTuber Keemstar has also heard about this but has not confirmed whether that is yearly or for the whole duration of the deal.

The Future Of Mixer And Exclusive Streaming Deals

It will be interesting to see the kind of content Ninja has on Mixer. It might be the same as Twitch. Ninja is best known for streaming Fortnite so he could stick with that. Don’t fix something that is not broken, right? He could add more games into the mix as well. Only time will tell.

Keep in mind that this is speculation based on previous numbers. We do not have any insider information regarding the deal. I think this is as close to the truth that we are going to get. I am sure that neither Ninja nor Microsoft are going to reveal any details regarding the money that was offered to the streamer to make the move to Mixer.

Something that I can say for sure is that this strategy is working for Microsoft and more streamers will be offered exclusivity deals. The deals might not be as big as the one that Ninja got but they will still be lucrative enough for streamers to consider moving from Twitch to Mixer.

The Epic Games Store has done something similar with games and people did not like that at all. It will be interesting to see what the fans think about the move to Mixer. This might not be as bad.

Intel Xe GPUs will release in due time and people have been wondering about the price. While a mistranslation on the internet made it appear that the entry-level cards will start at $200, we did get some information out of the correct translation.

Intel’s chief architect and graphics head Raja Koduri is working on the Intel Xe graphics cards as we speak and it turns out that Intel will not only compete with AMD but will take on Nvidia for the position of the best-performing graphics card on the market. The AMD Radeon graphics cards are great and perform well but they are not powerful enough to challenge the RTX 2080 Ti.

In order for Nvidia to be competitive, we need another player in the market that can offer the same level of performance as the RTX 2080 Ti. With that kind of competition, Nvidia will have to bring something innovative to the table or will have to offer more competitive prices.

Intel Xe GPUs

In a time where you can play games on your mobile phones or the Nintendo Switch, not many people are interested in spending $500-600 on a graphics card that is something that Raja Koduri himself pointed out. So what price point is Intel going to target with the Xe GPUs? All of them seems to be the correct answer according to Koduri. Here is what he had to say regarding the matter:

We have to hit everything; it’s just a matter of where do you start? The First one? The Second one? The Third one? And the strategy that we have within a period of roughly – let’s call it 2-3 years – to have the full stack.

Intel is not only going for the mid-range market but the entry-level and high-end market as well. This means that Intel is not only going to go up against AMD but Nvidia as well. That might not be the case right off the bat and Intel might start off with a mid-range graphics card but a high-end model is most likely in the works according to the included statement.

I hope that whatever Intel is working on is able to match or outperform the Nvidia counterpart at the time. That would be very interesting indeed. I would like to see what Nvidia does in order to counter such a threat.

Nvidia has been on top for as long as I can remember. The company has released some great product but the top tier graphics cards have been too expensive. I think that some competition could potentially bring the price down.
