Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is the next installment in the franchise. We just got a trailer of the game and we will get to see the gameplay next week. While we wait, here is a breakdown of the trailer as well as other details that you might want to learn about.
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla Details, Trailer Breakdown
The following are the things that you might have missed out during the trailer and some other details in general.
Odin is the god that Vikings believed in and in the trailer we can hear the protagonist scream “Odin is with us”. This happens on the battlefield when he spots a raven over the sky. You can even see statues of Odin in different scenes.
It has been revealed that Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is going to feature Assassin’s Creed elements of old so it is more than likely that we are not going to see Odin or Thor in the flesh. We could hear about these gods but it is unlikely that they are going to make an appearance in the game beyond statues and prayers.
Then again, we do see a man turn into a raven in the game and that could be Odin. So we are not sure at this point whether the game is going to dive into mythology like AC Odyssey.
The narrative director of the game Darby McDevitt mentioned that when it comes to Norse gods, they are not always watching you. They are more like human beings in the sense that you do something for them and they will do something for you. That is why we see the statue of Odin at the start and a ritual being held before going into battle. This is interesting because while this scene is taking place, the narrator says “godless barbarians”.
Settlements And Base Building
Ubisoft has mentioned that settlements are going to be a major part of the game. You will have to develop your settlement. That makes sense keeping in mind that the Vikings have moved from Norway to England so that they do have to do some building. From the screenshot taken from the trailer, you can see that there are buildings being constructed. That could mean that there will be some elements of base building in the game.
Ubisoft’s Thierry Noel had to mention the following about Vikings coming to England in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla:
That’s an excellent question. When we say “Vikings” it’s kind of used as a generic word. We know that in the West, it conjures up the image of brutes and plunderers that destroyed monasteries all over Western Europe, but in reality, it’s a bit more complicated than that. The term “Vikings” actually refers to an elite class of the Norse society. They were a certain group of people in Norse culture that were traders, explorers, excellent seafarers, settlers, and, yes, sometimes invaders and plunderers.
While Viking are known for raiding and killing a lot of these people were farmers and merchants. We will see that in the game. He went on to mention the following regarding settlements in the game:
Settlements were so important for Viking society. Not only were they traders and explorers, but they started to settle everywhere they could. We have archaeological information about Viking settlements in England; through that data, we know that settlements were the basis of their community and foundation for their livelihood.
We know that players will be able to choose between a male and a female protagonist. We even saw some females accompanying their male brethren on the battlefield.
Choices are going to play a major role in the game. In the trailer we see the protagonist stop his fellow Viking from killing a woman and her child while the narrator claims that “they kill and murder blindly”. Choices are not something new to the franchise, we got our fair share of that in AC Odyssey.
The narrator of the trailer is actually King Alfred of Wessex. He is famous for fighting off Vikings. In the books, he is not described as a tyrant but then again history is written by the victor. Ubisoft has confirmed that the devs will be showing a broader look at the world at the time and that the devs are looking forward to showing the Viking culture.
Thierry Noel had the following to say regarding the setting of the game:
It’s a fascinating time. It’s been called the Dark Ages because we don’t have as much information relative to certain time periods like Ancient Egypt or Greece. It may be dark, but it’s also a period of transition and transformation. The Roman world has disappeared, and the medieval era has not yet totally arrived. It’s a really interesting period of rebuilding the western world, rebuilding values, rebuilding states and nations, and mixing cultures that were isolated before. It’s not only a period of conflict; it’s a period of intensive cultural exchange between people, and Vikings played an essential role in that rebuilding of the world through exchanges.
Shields, Dual-wielding and Other Weapons
Shields are going to be a part of the game. Players can pick two pieces of gear at the same time. You can choose from a wide variety of weapons including axes, bows, swords, lances and even flails.
The developers have confirmed that you can even have two shields at a time which will be very interesting indeed.
In the trailer, we saw enemies getting impales by spears and heads being cut off. That makes sense keeping in mind that the term going berserk comes from Norse origins. Translated into the game, we could see some interesting combat mechanics in the game. You can expect brutal action.
The creative director of the game confirmed that there will be ring leaders in the game that have fewer weak points and are heavily armored.
Raven Instead Of An Eagle
Odin is often associated with a Raven. We have seen multiple shots of a raven in the trailer and it is possible that in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla your bird friend is going to be a raven rather than an eagle that we are used to from the previous games.
Variety Of Enemy Types
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is going to feature plenty of enemy types. You will be able to encounter new enemies with different weapons even after spending 10-20 hours in the game. These enemies can be of higher level and difficult to kill. Kind of like mini-bosses.
We have seen these kinds of enemies in AC Oddysey but after the first few enemies, the recipe did get stale. That should be fixed in this upcoming game.
Assassins Creed Mechanics
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla will have older AC mechanics that we love. You will be able to blend in with people around you. This did not work on Odyssey or Origins but keeping in mind that there will be Vikings in England, Ubisoft would pull this off. This is a feature that I loved in the older games but since then has been lost. This should be an interesting comeback.
Now only can you fire arrows from bows but you can throw weapons like lances and axes as well. That has been depicted in the trailer and confirmed by Ashraf Ismail, the Creative Director of the game.
Not only can you choose to be a man or a woman but there are character customization options as well. You can customize the hair, tattoos and other aspects of your character. You can change the appearance of gear and weapons as well.
When going on raids, you will have other companions with you that you can recruit. You can change their appearance to a certain degree in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla as well.
Ashraf Ismail confirmed that while the game is set with Viking fantasy in mind, it is still within the AC world. Without spoiling the story, he mentioned that the protagonist is going to come across assassins. The protagonist does not really know what being an assassins means but the two do have some kind of common ground.
The protagonist is going to work with assassins early on in the game but it is going to be an important part of the story. You will also get the hidden blade. He believes that this is such a good weapon that you would not hide it from the enemy.
