In the gameplay trailer of Assassin’s Creed Mirage shown during Ubisoft Forward, we got to see Basim pulling off a teleport assassination skill allowing players to kill multiple enemies with a single skill. This move seemed like it was inspired by Shadow of Mordor. Assassin’s Creed Mirage’s associate animation director Benjamin Potts provides some details about the teleporting assassination skill.
Teleporting Assassination Skill In Assassin’s Creed Mirage
Benjamin Potts mentions that this is a way of expressing Basim’s agility and that in development it seemed to be too powerful. The following is what he had to say:
Assassin Focus is a mechanic similar to Double Assassination that controls the flow of approaching multiple targets in close proximity with Basim’s concentration. By skill up, you can also assassinate two or more people. Assassin Focus was also created as a movement of the protagonist that has never been seen before, in order to express Basim’s agility. It took me a lot of different ideas and prototypes to get here. At first, it was too powerful, but I think I was able to build up the gauge by succeeding in stealth, and then I was able to use it, and I think it was sublimated into Assassin’s Creed-like skill.
From an animator’s point of view, Assassin’s Creed protagonist is a human and not a superhero, so we’ve done a lot of work to ensure that multiple assassinations can be done with smooth transitions while still being ground-based. We are adding animations that weren’t there. Also, Assassin Focus needs to be activated considering the end of the ability. If you want to continue stealth or end in a place close to the escape route, you have to use it while thinking more strategically.
Potts also mentioned that reusing animations from the previous games is possible but the battle animations used in Mirage are new to account for the scimitar. New motion capture for the game is done with trainers and choreographers who specialize in such weapons. These people helped create the moveset for Basim.
We personally thought that some of the animations in the gameplay trailer seemed rough and reused. The gameplay also seemed a bit slow. But the game is not completely ready yet and these things can be changed in due time. I hope that the final product does not have animation issues.
