AMD Ryzen 9 7940HS Phoenix APU Beats 6900HX And Intel 12900HK

AMD Announced the Phoenix APUs at CES 2023, and we learned about some general specifications of the AMD Ryzen 9 7940HS, but now initial benchmarks for the APU have been spotted, and it beat the Ryzen 6900HX and the Intel 12900HK.

The AMD Ryzen 9 7940HS is a mobile chip, meant for laptops. According to the official specs posted on AMD’s site, it features 8 cores, 16 threads, a base clock speed of 4.0 GHz, and a boost clock speed of 5.2 GHz. The AMD Configurable TDP of the APU is between 35 to 54W. The chip is based on the 4nm process from TSMC and features the RDNA 3 Radeon 780M integrated GPU.

The benchmarks of the AMD Ryzen 9 7940HS are from an HP EliteBook 865 16-inch G10 Notebook with 64 GB of memory @ 4800 MHz, 2880 x 1800 display resolution, and Windows 11. You can check out the benchmark below but do note that UserBenchmark has been accused of favoring Intel over AMD.

The base and boost clock speeds mentioned here are lower at 3.7 GHz and 4.2 GHz but that is alright since this is an engineering sample and not a final product.

The Ryzen 9 7940HS chip manages to score 101%. The Normal score is 105%, the Heavy is 121%, and the Server score is 94%. To put this into perspective, the Ryzen 9 6900HX has an average score of 80%. The Bench, Normal, Heavy, and Server ratings of the fastest Ryzen 9 6900HX sample on UserBenchmark are 97%, 98%, 106%, and 88%, respectively. You can check out the same benchmark for the AMD Ryzen 9 6900HS inside an Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 below:

Furthermore, the Ryzen 9 7940HS chip is only 6% slower than the desktop Ryzen 5 7600 CPU and beats the Core i9-12900HK/H by a slight margin. The Radeon 780M graphics that are paired with the chip score 44% and are similar to the desktop RX 570 and marginally slower than the mobile GTX 1060.

While these benchmarks do not translate all that well into real-world performance, it is safe to say that after AMD has tweaked the Ryzen 9 7940HS to match the official specifications, it will be a mighty chip. What do you think about these benchmarks? Let us know if you would be interested in buying a laptop powered by the 7940HS.

You can also check out the benchmarks of the Intel i9-13980HX, which beats the AMD Ryzen 9 7845HX.
