Amazon Games has revealed an agreement with Middle-earth Enterprises to develop and publish a new The Lord of the Rings game based on the legendary literary works of J.R.R. Tolkien. The upcoming title, in development for PC and consoles, will be a massively multiplayer online RPG featuring the iconic stories found in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings literary trilogy.
The Amazon Games Orange County studio—the same team that delivered the popular MMO New World—will develop this game. This is the first time that one of Amazon Games’ internal studios is working on a game based on an external IP. Rich Lawrence, director of the Amazon Games Orange County studio, mentioned the following regarding the game:
The number-one thing about a property like this is that you have to be respectful and authentic. When somebody is a fan of The Lord of the Rings and sits down and plays this game for the first time, they have to say, ‘This was crafted by a bunch of people who lived in this world just like I do in my head. They get it.’
Rich mentioned that team that is working on the new Lord of the Rings game is a fan of these works and is hoping to create a game that fans are going to enjoy.
