To annex a province you need a city. You will have your main city from the start of the game and you can annex provinces around it. You will need a free population, which grows with each turn. The growth of your population depends on the amount of food that you have. The more food you have the faster your population is going to grow. There are other ways of quickly growing your population. To Annex a province or an ancient wonder, you need to select your city. This will highlight the provinces around the city that you can annex and improvements such as mines and farms will appear. Some terrains are special and you can build special improvements on them to get additional bonuses.
